The image of Our Lady of Divine Providence was first created by Italian artist Scipione Pulzone in 1580. This image has The Blessed Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus cradled in her arms.
She is the patroness of the Barnabite order as well as Puerto Rico. Since 1896, the Barnabite order has adopted this image as part of religious decor in their properties.
On November 19 Columbus discovered Puerto Rico. Pope Paul VI in 1969 decreed that this day would be the day for the feast day of Our Lady of Divine Providence. It was originally celebrated on January 2.
Puerto Ricans on the island and in the American States celebrate this day with a festive Mass, processions, and with other cultural aspects that represent the Puerto Rican culture.
The image of Our Lady of Divine Providence is a beautiful one indeed. Our Lady is holding in her arms the Lord of Lords, the God of gods. A human woman who represents us before Christ. She is our intercessor before Jesus the Lord.
May Our Lady of Divine Providence pray for all of us, for all Puerto Ricans - those who are faithful and those who have fallen away from the faith, and for Puerto Rico, the "Isla del Encanto."
