Reflecting on the Anniversary of September 11, 2001

We Said We’d Never Forget: Reflecting on the Anniversary of September 11, 2001

The morning of September 11, 2001, dawned bright and clear, a seemingly ordinary Tuesday in New York City. The skies were a crisp blue, and the late summer air carried the promise of a new day. People bustled through the streets of Manhattan, heading to work, sipping coffee, and navigating the familiar rhythm of urban life. In the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, workers settled into their offices, unaware that within hours, their lives—and the world—would be irrevocably changed.

We said we’d never forget, but as the years stretch into decades, the sharp edges of that day’s memory are beginning to blur. Society, distracted by new crises and the relentless march of time, is starting to let the weight of September 11 slip into the background. Yet, on this anniversary, we must pause to remember—not just the tragedy, but the courage, the sacrifice, and the humanity that shone through the darkness.

At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 carrying 92 people, including 11 crew members, crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The impact tore a gaping hole between the 93rd and 99th floors, sending a fireball and plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky. Confusion rippled through the city. Was it an accident? A mechanical failure? As television cameras turned toward the burning tower, the nation watched in stunned silence. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175, carrying 65 people, slammed into the South Tower between the 77th and 85th floors. The second crash erased any doubt: America was under attack. The images of those planes, swallowed by steel and glass, became seared into the collective consciousness—a moment when time seemed to stop.

The horror unfolded with relentless speed. At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the western side of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, killing 184 people, including 59 passengers and crew. A fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, carrying 44 people, was hijacked and aimed for an unknown target, likely in Washington, D.C. Thanks to the bravery of passengers and crew who learned of the other attacks via phone calls and fought back, Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m., sparing countless lives at the cost of their own. In New York, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m., followed by the North Tower at 10:28 a.m., each crumbling in a matter of seconds, sending clouds of dust and debris choking the streets below. By the end of the day, 2,977 lives were lost, including first responders, office workers, airline passengers, and bystanders. The world watched, horrified, as the unimaginable became reality.

Amid the chaos, stories of heroism emerged, bright beacons in the darkness. Father Mychal Judge, a Franciscan friar and chaplain for the New York City Fire Department, was among the first to respond. Known for his compassion and tireless service to the marginalized—homeless people, AIDS patients, and recovering alcoholics—Father Judge rushed to the World Trade Center to offer spiritual support. He was in the lobby of the North Tower, praying and administering last rites to the injured, when debris from the collapsing South Tower struck him. Father Judge, 68, became the first officially recorded fatality of the attacks, his body carried out by firefighters in a haunting image that would later symbolize sacrifice. His life, marked by love and selflessness, ended in an act of profound courage, embodying the spirit of those who ran toward danger to save others.

Firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical personnel became the backbone of the response. Men and women like Firefighter Michael Lynch, who climbed the stairs of the North Tower to rescue trapped workers, only to perish when the building fell. Or Port Authority Police Officer John McLoughlin, who survived being trapped in the rubble for hours, later immortalized in stories of resilience. Ordinary citizens, too, became heroes. In the stairwells of the Twin Towers, strangers helped one another, guiding the injured to safety or carrying those who couldn’t walk. On the streets below, New Yorkers formed human chains, passing water and supplies to first responders. Across the Hudson River, boat captains and civilians organized an impromptu evacuation, ferrying thousands to safety in what became known as the “Boatlift of 9/11.” These acts of bravery and solidarity defined the day, reminding us that even in the face of evil, humanity’s capacity for good endures.

The shock reverberated far beyond New York. Cardinal Edward Egan, the Archbishop of New York, appeared on television that day, his face etched with fear and disbelief covered with soot and ashes. “God help us,” he said, his voice trembling as he grappled with the scale of the tragedy unfolding before him. A man accustomed to offering comfort and guidance, Cardinal Egan was visibly shaken, his words echoing the collective anguish of a nation. His presence on the airwaves, raw and unfiltered, captured the vulnerability felt by millions. Churches, synagogues, and mosques filled with people seeking solace, their prayers mingling with tears. The attacks were not just an assault on buildings but on the very fabric of society—its sense of safety, its trust in the ordinary.

In the days that followed, the world learned the scope of the plot. Nineteen hijackers, orchestrated by the terrorist group al-Qaeda and its leader, Osama bin Laden, had executed a meticulously planned attack. The hijackers, armed with box cutters and a fanatical resolve, exploited vulnerabilities in aviation security, turning commercial airliners into weapons. The targets—the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and likely the U.S. Capitol or White House—symbolized American economic, military, and political power. The message was clear: no one was untouchable. Yet, the response was equally powerful. Volunteers poured into Ground Zero, sifting through rubble in search of survivors. Blood donation centers overflowed. Communities rallied, raising funds and offering support to families shattered by loss. The phrase “United We Stand” became a rallying cry, a testament to resilience in the face of terror.

But as the years have passed, the unity and clarity of that moment have faded. We said we’d never forget, yet society is beginning to. The children born after 2001 have no personal memory of the day; for them, 9/11 is history, not lived experience. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, launched in response to the attacks, have ended, their outcomes complex and divisive. Political polarization has fractured the sense of shared purpose that once bound the nation. Memorials stand at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, but the raw emotion of the day—its fear, its grief, its defiance—has softened with time. Social media, once a platform for collective mourning, now buzzes with new controversies, new tragedies. The promise to never forget feels less like a vow and more like a whisper, drowned out by the noise of a world that moves on.

This forgetting is not deliberate but insidious. The demands of daily life—economic pressures, global crises, personal struggles—pull attention away from the past. Yet, the consequences of 9/11 linger. Airport security, once lax, is now a ritual of scrutiny, a reminder of the day’s lasting impact. The Patriot Act, passed in the aftermath, reshaped privacy and surveillance, sparking debates that continue today. The families of the victims, the first responders who still battle illnesses from toxic exposure at Ground Zero, and the veterans of the subsequent wars carry the weight of 9/11 in their bodies and souls. To forget is to diminish their sacrifice, to let the lessons of that day slip through our fingers.

The heroes of 9/11 remind us why remembrance matters. Father Mychal Judge’s life was a testament to service, his death a call to action. The firefighters who climbed stairwells knowing they might not return, the passengers on Flight 93 who fought back against impossible odds, the ordinary people who became extraordinary in a moment of crisis—their stories demand to be told. Cardinal Egan’s stunned plea for divine help captured a universal longing for meaning amid chaos. These are not just historical footnotes but touchstones of human resilience, courage, and compassion. To honor them, we must do more than pause for a moment of silence; we must actively keep their memory alive.

Society’s drift toward forgetting is not inevitable. Schools can teach the history of 9/11, not just as a timeline of events but as a story of human spirit. Communities can hold vigils, not out of obligation but out of reverence. Individuals can share stories—of the victims, the heroes, the survivors—with younger generations, ensuring that the weight of the day endures. We can visit the memorials, read the names etched in stone, and reflect on what was lost and what was gained. The promise to never forget is a commitment to carry the past into the future, to let it shape how we live, how we love, and how we stand together.

As we mark this anniversary, let us renew that promise. Let us remember the 2,977 lives taken too soon, the families left to grieve, the heroes who gave everything. Let us honor the resilience of a nation that, for a moment, set aside differences to stand as one. And let us pray, as Cardinal Egan did, for divine guidance in a world still searching for peace.

A Prayer for Those Who Perished

Eternal God, source of all hope and healing, we come before you on this solemn day to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We lift up the souls of the 2,977 who perished—the workers in the towers, the passengers on the planes, the first responders who ran toward danger, and all whose lives were taken by hatred. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let your light shine upon them.

Comfort the families who carry the ache of loss, the survivors who bear the scars of that day, and the first responders still suffering from its aftermath. Give strength to those who rebuild, who remember, who refuse to let evil have the final word. Inspire us to honor the fallen through acts of love, courage, and unity.

We pray for the heroes—Father Mychal Judge, the firefighters, the police officers, the ordinary people who became extraordinary. May their sacrifice remind us to live with purpose and compassion. Guide our world toward peace, that the pain of this day may never be repeated. And hold us, as you held those who cried out in fear and grief, with your boundless mercy.

God help us, as we strive to never forget. Amen.

Reflecting on September 11, 23 Years Later: A Legacy of Resilience and Remembrance

Reflecting on September 11, 23 Years Later: A Legacy of Resilience and Remembrance

As the sun rises on September 11, 2024, it marks 23 years since a day that is etched into the collective memory of the United States and the world. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were a turning point in history, changing the course of nations and the lives of millions. On this day, nearly three decades later, we pause to reflect on what has changed and to ensure that the promise to never forget is upheld.

The attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the brave souls aboard Flight 93 who thwarted further tragedy, resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives. These individuals were fathers, mothers, children, friends, and colleagues, each with dreams and stories left unfulfilled. The ripple effects of their loss are still felt today by families and communities across the globe.

In the immediate aftermath, the world witnessed the resilience of the human spirit: first responders rushing into danger to save lives, communities coming together to support one another, and nations standing in solidarity. The tragedy brought out a sense of unity and strength that defined the response to the attacks.

Since then, the landscape of global security has been transformed. The United States and its allies embarked on a long war against terrorism, leading to shifts in foreign policy and national security strategies. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the implementation of the USA PATRIOT Act are just two examples of the enduring impact of 9/11 on domestic policy.

The physical scars have slowly healed; Ground Zero is now a place of reflection and remembrance, home to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. This sacred site serves as a testament to the lives lost and a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the American people.

Yet, as time passes, the challenge of keeping the memory alive grows. A new generation, for whom the events of 9/11 are a historical footnote rather than a lived experience, is coming of age. It is the responsibility of those who remember to pass on the stories, the lessons, and the significance of that day.

On this 23rd anniversary, leaders and citizens alike have come together to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11. President Joe Biden, in his statement, reaffirmed the nation's vow to "Never Forget" and highlighted the unity and resolve that emerged from the tragedy. Across the country, communities held moments of silence, memorial services, and educational events to ensure that the narrative of 9/11 is not lost to time.

The Personal Stories of 9/11: Voices of Resilience and Hope

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, have left an indelible mark on the world. Behind the staggering numbers and the geopolitical aftermath are the deeply personal stories of individuals who experienced the day firsthand. These stories form a tapestry of resilience, hope, and the enduring human spirit.

One such story is that of Melodie Homer, whose husband LeRoy was the First Officer on United Airlines Flight 93. LeRoy's dream was to work for United Airlines, a dream that was tragically cut short when Flight 93 was hijacked and crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Melodie recalls the little things that made up their life together, like the postcards LeRoy would send from his travels, which would arrive long after he had returned home. On that fateful day, as confusion and panic spread, Melodie's world was turned upside down with a phone call confirming her worst fears.

Another poignant narrative comes from Florence Jones, who worked on the 77th floor of the South Tower. When the North Tower was struck, she went up to the 78th floor to urge her colleagues to evacuate. Moments later, the South Tower was hit, just one floor above her. Florence's escape was a harrowing journey through smoke-filled stairwells, guided by the hands of her colleagues. Her boss carried her shoes as they descended, a gesture of care amidst chaos. Florence's story is one of survival and the profound responsibility she feels to those who didn't make it out.

These stories, and countless others like them, are vital threads in the fabric of 9/11's history. They remind us that behind every statistic are human beings with lives, loves, and legacies. As we commemorate the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, we honor not just the memory of those we lost but also the strength and courage of those who survived. Their voices and experiences are a powerful reminder of the capacity for resilience in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

The personal stories from 9/11 are not just tales of survival; they are testimonies to the power of human connection and the unyielding will to persevere. They teach us that even in the darkest of times, there is light to be found in the support and compassion we offer one another. As we reflect on these stories, we reaffirm our commitment to remember, to learn, and to move forward with hope and unity.

The question posed, "Did we forget?" is met with a resounding commitment to remembrance. The legacy of 9/11 is not only one of loss and pain but also of resilience, unity, and the enduring human spirit. As we look back on the 23 years since that fateful day, we recognize that while the world has changed, the imperative to remember remains unchanged.

In honoring the memory of those we lost, we continue to build a future defined not by fear, but by hope, not by division, but by unity. The narrative of 9/11 is one of a tragedy that revealed the strength of a nation and the compassion of its people. As we move forward, we carry the stories of 9/11 with us, a reminder of the past and a beacon for the future.

September 11, We are Forgetting...

The Many Missed Signals Before 9/11

Few events in history have left as indelible a mark on the collective consciousness as the September 11 attacks. The catastrophic destruction of the World Trade Center towers in New York City, along with the attack on the Pentagon and the downing of United Airlines Flight 93, changed the course of history forever. But what led to this tragic day? How did U.S. leaders miss so many warning signs, allowing such a devastating event to occur?

The Long Run-Up

Al Qaeda, founded in 1988, had been brewing for over a decade before 9/11. Most Americans didn't fully grasp that the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center was just the beginning of something much larger. While it may have seemed like an isolated incident at the time, those on the periphery recognized connections to Osama bin Laden and his associates. Bin Laden himself was an unindicted co-conspirator in that earlier attack, and his name kept cropping up in relation to extremist activities.

An Organized Crime

The plot behind 9/11 was an intricate conspiracy that spanned different phases and cells over a significant period. It wasn't merely a single event but rather an organized act of terrorism. The specific conspiracy leading to hijackings and attacks on 9/11 had roots stretching back to the end of the Afghan War and fundraising operations for jihadis during the 1980s.

The Unseen Web

For most Americans, 9/11 seemed to come out of nowhere. However, it had been brewing for years. Al Qaeda's founding in 1988 marked thirteen years before that fateful day. People should have paid more attention, especially those at the CIA who ran the bin Laden unit and New York police and FBI agents focused on jihadi groups in Brooklyn.

Global Condemnation

World leaders, political representatives, religious figures, and international media universally condemned the attacks. Even governments traditionally hostile to the United States—such as Cuba, Iran, Libya, and North Korea—denounced them. However, some reports suggested celebrations of the attacks or accused the U.S. of bringing them upon itself. These claims remain uncorroborated and often link to unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.

U.S. Response

In response to 9/11, President George W. Bush declared a war on terrorism. The goals included bringing Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda to justice while preventing other terrorist networks from emerging. Economic sanctions, military actions against states harboring terrorists, global surveillance, and intelligence sharing became key strategies.

The overthrow of Taliban rule in Afghanistan by a U.S.-led coalition marked one of the largest operations directly connected to terrorism outside U.S. borders.

The Enduring Legacy

Two decades later, Americans still feel sadness when watching TV coverage of those horrific events. The attacks permanently changed how we live our lives. As we remember September 11th each year, we must also reflect on missed signals and lessons learned—so that history never repeats.

We Will Never Forget

Lastly, we all who were born and alive in 2001 into 2002 promised that "We Would Never Forget." The attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the jetplanes that were taken over were something America has never seen before. Yes, we had the battles and war during the colonies-Great Britain conflicts, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and even the bombing at the World Trade Center in 1993. We had the shoot at Columbine High School in 1999; however, September 11 in 2001 was something different and unique.

It was a coordinated effort to attack the United States of America and intimidate the nation.  Over 3,000 people died on that day.  Every year we commemorate this day by reading the names of the deceased, telling stories about their heroism, and gathering at the spots where they tragically died.   Many news networks replace the news of that day as if it were happening. The video back then looked clear despite being standard definition. It looks blurry and "old" now due to the advances in television technology with high definition, 2k, 4k, and now even 8k. Nevertheless, the news of that day is still as bothersome and shocking today as it was on that day when we all were anxious and not sure what was going on.

I remember CBS 2 as the only channel operating in the Bronx. All the others had their transmitters on the World Trade Center. CBS had one there and on the Empire State Building.  The cell phones were working erratically. We were getting calls from different numbers and our numbers showed up differently on the caller ID of others. Landlines were busy. It was total chaos. The memories are engraved in us who were conscious on that day.

But after 2011, it seemed things had been dying down. The memories are fading. People are not remembering it as before. The prayers and thoughts are gone. There are no big religious services anymore. No word from the Archbishop of NY despite his predecessor Cardinal Egan being present as the buildings fell. I remember him looking scared saying "God help us" almost in shock full of soot from the collapsed towers.

It seems we are forgetting. We are becoming desensitized. Perhaps due to the world conflicts happening now or perhaps we are just exhausted from the constant shootings in our cities, schools, and other areas. We are just so used to violence now that September 11, 2001, is being forgotten. Perhaps the fact that the date was never declared a holiday for us to stay home from school and work to remember.  There are many reasons we can think of as to why September 11 is being forgotten.

In any event, we must continue our promise even after the last living witness has gone and passed.  We must never forget!  If we forget, history may repeat itself.  I am afraid it may be worse. As technology advances, we will see new threats. Our descendants will see even worse threats. Right now we have metal detectors and other security measures set in place to prevent the hijacking of planes. We go through long lines, remove our shoes, and even get extreme pat downs that borderline constitutionality.

Despite these, we see people opening doors on jets in the air. We see the numerous fights that take place with rowdy passages. We saw a pilot intentionally crash the plane in Europe and there is only a matter of time before a pilot with mental illness will attempt something dangerous.  This is now in the 21st century, imagine later with the advancement of AI and ways to fool detectors and screening tactics!  We may see another September 11 take place here or around the world if we forget. If we forget, our alert will go down. We will become complacent with "well enough" like we were on September 10, 2001.  It cannot be like this!  We must never forget, not only to honor the dead on that tragic day but to prevent it from happening again.  Let us never forget!

September 11, 18 Years Later

Time flies... it has been 18 years since the horrific attack against the United States of America on September 11, 2001. On this day, cowardly hijackers took over commercial airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center "Twin Towers," the Pentagon and in a field in Pennsylvania. The latter was due to brave passengers on flight 93 who fought back against the hijackers.

Many remember the day well. It was a clear sunny day. The weather was spring-like. When news of a plane crashed into the first tower, everyone was wondering how this could have happened. They never expected terrorism. Americans were off to start a new decade after enjoying a wondering economy in the '90s. No one really thought about terrorism. It was just about enjoying life, going to school and work and nothing else. There were no social media at the time other than AOL chat rooms, AOL instant messenger, ICQ, and online forums. Teens would go on Teen Chat Center or NewGrounds for their entertainment. There were no mp3 players, only CD and cassette walkmans. Cell phones were limited to bulky carry items that only made costly phone calls. Texting and the internet on phones were not even conceived yet. Apple INC was coming back from nearly being wiped out by Microsoft. Steve Jobs introduced his colorful IMac computers at the time. Playstation 2 was taking the market from Nintendo. Sega and other consoles disappeared from popularity. There as no wifi, no hotspots, no e-readers etc. It was a different time, and in a sense, a different world.

September 11th changed all of this. The site of the Twin Towers ablaze and eventually collapsing, the hit on the Pentagon and the inability of the president to govern would send a strong message to all: America was not ready. If with the cost of a mere plane ticket a person bent on doing evil can paralyze the world's most powerful and richest, then that speaks volumes. America experienced a new type of warfare. This was not like the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor or anything else. The attack was within and without notice. Government agencies that deal with intelligence failed. All they knew was that operative for Al-Qaida were boarding flights. But, which ones and when? No one knew the answers. As Air Force One sat on a runway in Florida, reports came in that a plane was coming towards it that had its transponders off. Once cleared, Air Force One took off with speeds not typical of a plane its size. Meanwhile, in New York, there was chaos. Manhattan was shut down. People wandered the streets not knowing what was going on other than two planes hit the towers. At the towers, people jumped out windows preferring death on pavement than evaporating in the hot temperatures from the flames. Those present will never forget the sounds of their bodies hitting the pavement. A loud bang followed by a crunching sound. It was just horrendous. Soon thereafter, the towers collapsed, one after another after the passing of some time.

The events of September 11th remind us how fragile a country and government can be. We take for granted the systems man puts into place and believe them to be impenetrable. However, nothing is secure in life. Nothing is foolproof. The effects of September 11th are still be felt today. We now have heavy security at airports and other places of travel. Our current president is trying hard to secure borders so that people like those who hijacked the planes on September 11th cannot enter easily. But more remains to be done.

Communications systems fell apart that day. Phone lines were either busy or mixed with other lines. One would get calls from other states and when one called another, a different phone number would appear on caller ID. Walkie Talkies used by firefighters and police officers were scrambled. They could not communicate with each other. There was chaos everywhere, not just in New York City. The president himself was lost on Airforce One. Communications onboard were not working as expected. His plane was flying around the United States with no sense of direction. This attack hit everyone, top to bottom.

We must not forget the memories of those who perished on this day and the days and years after. People are still dying from the effects of the ashes and other substances in the air. The remains of many of the fallen are still being identified even after so long. Today, firefighter Michael Haub was laid to rest after his remains were identified. To date, only 60% of the 2, 753 victims were identified.

Despite the evil and chaos of that day, we can focus on the good people and good things that came about. First, we remember Father Mychael Judge, OFM of the Franciscan Holy Name province. He was a homosexual priest who ministered to all peoples. As chaplain to the FDNY, he was first at the scene with firefighters at the World Trade Center. As he prayed for those hurt and deceased, some debris hit him killing him instantly despite having a hardhat on. Let us not forget Todd Beamer who was on flight 93 and famously said, "Let's roll" as he and others went after the hijackers. Let us not forget Moira Smith, the only NYPD female officer to perish on the date. Then we have Manal Ezzat, a Muslim woman who took to task to build a chapel at the site where the plane hit the Pentagon. This chapel is used by people of different faiths. St. John Paul II was the pope at the time. He was watching the events on the news and was as shocked as everyone else. He went to the chapel to pray and later on tried to contact president Bush who was unable to be reached. The pope shed tears for all Americans.

The documentary 102 Minutes that Changed America relives the events of that day. One feels like it is happening again just watching it. The look of panic on the people of New York who are often stoic tells it all. The documentary feels surreal as if it were a movie. The scenes of September 11 look like scenes from monster movies like Godzilla or Cloverfield. I believe the latter borrowed from September 11 for its visual effects. Those of us alive and conscience that day made a promise never to forget. We must keep that promise.

I hope the day is set as a federal holiday so that it will be engraved on the memories of all, young and old. It should be taught in schools and moments of silent should be mandatory everywhere. Churches should ring their bells and lead the way. September 11th must never be forgotten.  It was a time that literally brought America to her knees, not in surrender or defeat, but in prayer. Unfortunately, a lot has happened since which has brought about the distrust of religion in America. We must change this.  Prayer must be a major part of the family and society if we are to prevent terrorism. Only prayer changes things.  Many today, including some Democrats mock the idea of prayer.  When mass shootings occur, they say "action not thoughts and prayers."  How ignorant are they to believe this? America has done "action." She has had laws, but laws fail.  Only God works.  Only prayer to God works.  Atheists may also have an issue with this and may go as far as to blame Islam or religion in general for world conflicts.  Studies show that the major conflicts in human history are caused by political tensions, not religion.  While those who perpetrated the attacks on 911 were Muslim, this does not mean Islam is at war with America.  Every group has its fanatics who go to the extreme to push their ideas.

As we remember today, let us continue our promise never to forget.  Let us do good on this day and every day in honor of the victims.

September 11 - 15 Years Later We Will Never Forget

We have just had the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on American and the world. I mention the world because people from many nations died on this day.  It was just surreal that 15 years have passed. It seems like yesterday that we turned on the television to see images of the Twin Towers on fire and smoking. In New York City, many of the networks were down due to the antennae at one of the towers beings taken out by the plane crash. To my knowledge, only CBS on channel 2 in New York was on air. Other networks asked for permission to broadcast on other channels normally reserved for other networks.

I remember the day as if it were yesterday.  The sights and smells, the sounds and feels are all vivid. I was a kid and remember the day was slightly cool and sunny.  There was no cloud in sight, none. New Yorkers were on their way to work, some already there. It felt like a normal day in the city. Then a plane crashes into one of the towers. At first, many thought it was a plane crash.  However, the weather was just too good for a plane to crash.  Technical problems were also ruled out by common sense since a pilot would not speed up a plane whose engines have failed. Like captain Sullenberger of US Airways Flight 1549, a pilot would steer clear of skyscrapers and look for a place to possibly land a failing plane. On September 11, this was clearly not the case.  The trajectory and speed of the plane clearly demonstrated intention to crash the plane. September 11 will always be a date engraved in the minds and hearts of all who witnessed it, whether in person or on television.

At the time, there was no such thing as Facebook or Twitter. You Tube did not exist.  Cell phones were around but were very limited. In fact, the networks were so congested on that day that phones were not working or were receiving calls from elsewhere.  Cell numbers were even mixed around. One's number would show up as a different number on caller ID due to the confusion in the network. The events were indeed horrific.  Planes were hijacked, people killed on them and with them. Those same planes were used as missiles of sorts by terrorists who crashed them into the World Trade Center's "Twin Towers" and the Pentagon.  Another plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after the brave passengers thwarted the terrorist's plans to use the plane as another weapon - possibly aiming for the Capitol building or White House - by saying "Let's roll" and ambushing the terrorists. Today we are facing terrorist attacks, now with planes, but with disturbed individuals who inspired by ISIS/ISIL and taking it upon itself to attack selected targets. This year, we have seen many attacks in Paris and in our own nation. Workers at a party were killed in a party at San Bernadino and a gay club in Orlando was ambushed by a lone wolf. Terrorism seems unstoppable. Where will be the next target is on the minds of many Americans. It is a scary time to live indeed.  However, we must try our best to live normal lives.

Law enforcement must be creative in their efforts to prevent terrorism. As is stands, the internet seems to be what is fueling these extremists.  Social networks are often beacons of free speech. Extremists are taking advantage of this and using these outlets to promote their propaganda. In my opinion, more has to be done by social media in order to thwart these disturbed individuals.  It seems that social media networks have their priorities mixed up. In 2013, my Twitter was permanently suspended after atheist trolls mass reported it.  Twitter did not want to budge and left my account suspended despite proof that I did nothing.  Last year, my Facebook was locked out because I used "Sacerdotus" as a name. Now just last month, Google + suspended my profile for the same reason. Yet, accounts run by terrorists remain untouched and free to tweet and post. What is wrong?  What is going on? I ask myself this many times, and I am not the only one. If social media monitors terrorist accounts and is quick to remove them, I believe this will be very effective in thwarting any future attacks. September 11 should remind us that we cannot remain dormant. We must also not forget our Judeo-Christian roots as Americans.

On September 14, 2001, President Bush declared the day the National Day of Prayer & Remembrance. Ironically, on this date, the Catholic Church celebrates the Triumph of the Holy Cross  It is also ironic that among the piles of dust, twisted steel beams and other debris, all that remained were two beams in the form of a cross.  Was God telling us something?  We cannot know for sure, but coincidences do not exist.  Anything that happens in life has some reason or cause.  To me, it is Divine Providence at work reminding us that we have strayed. American keeps straying away from her God in whom she claims to trust in her motto. We Christians are also at fault. Instead of evangelizing, we have taken upon what I call "comfortable Christianity." We have sat back in our pews believing that Christianity's roots were unmovable, so to speak. This stagnant attitude has led to the legalization of abortion, so-called same-sex marriage, laws restricting religious freedom and now the pushing of gender theory to the point that the once settled matter of who uses what bathroom is now in a state of confusion. Christians need to wake up and restore America.

Presidential candidate Donald Trump claims to want to "Make American Great Again," however, this can only be done if we put substance behind the motto "In God we Trust."  As 2 Chronicles 7:14 says: "...if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."  Let us pray for the brave souls of September 11, 2001 and continue our promise: We Will Never Forget!

9-11-01 - We Will Never Forget

Today is the anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks on the United States of America in 2001.  This was 14 years ago!  I remember this day like if it was yesterday.  The images and sounds are vivid in my memory.
September 11 will always be a date engraved in the minds and hearts of all who witnessed it, whether in person or on television. The events were indeed horrific. Planes were hijacked, people killed on them.

Those same planes were used as missiles by terrorists who crashed them into the World Trade Center's "Twin Towers" and the Pentagon. Another plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after the brave passengers thwarted the terrorist's plans to use the plane as another weapon - possibly aimed for the Capitol building or White House by saying "Let's roll" and ambushing the terrorists  Today we are facing more terrorist threats from a group called ISIS/ISIL who is determine to bring an "Islamic State" to the world following a delusional ultra conservative rule of Islam.  They have been taking over regions in Iraq and Syria forcing migrants to flee; beheaded Americans, raped women and young boys as well as slaughtered religious minorities, many of them who are Christian.   There is so much evil in the world that it has us all in shock.

There are many questions we ask. One is why.
Why did this happen?

How can people be so evil to even think up these ideas and carry them out?

The answer is sin. The infection of original sin is transmitted by concupiscence as St. Augustine tells us. Concupiscence is a strong desire to seek what is bad and evil.  Evil, general bad things and sin appear to be fun or useful to humanity because of concupiscence.  Even good things are often perverted and used to do evil as well.   It is the "Id" gone wild, so to speak.

Some anti religious people claim religion caused Sept 11; however, that is not so. This concupiscence or desire to do evil is the root cause. Terrorists hijacked Islam in order to carry out these heinous attacks in the name of God. The reason was not religion itself, but politics. Those who feel the United States of America is an unwanted presence in the Middle East came up with a plan to bring this nation to its knees.

That plan in 2001 did bring the USA to it knees, but not in defeat. It brought us to prayer. America was reminded that while it is a super power, it is not the be all end all of the globe.

Unfortunately, America has been spreading many ideas that feed concupiscence.  In a nation that kills its own unborn children and which promotes promiscuity in the guise of "safe sex," attempts to pervert marriage with all kinds of strange variations. Those who are spiritually mature can see the real battle that is going on between evil and good. (Eph 6:12)  Like Communist Russia, the USA has made many errors run rampant throughout the globe.  These Islamic terrorists are using the faults of America to brainwash followers to go out and kill Americans who they view as being part of a Christian nation.  Christianity is presented as a false religion that needs to be eradicated along with America and other Western nations.

September 11 reminded us that we are not gods. We cannot live in this life thinking that nothing will happen or that we control every aspect of space, time and matter. America is not immortal.  Unfortunately, America learned this lesson the hard way.  Nevertheless, it was beautiful to see this nation become "e pluribus unum" in the days that followed the attack.  Everyone united despite differences. Churches, Synagogues, Mosques were full nearly every day. Everyone prayed, helped each other in a spirit of goodwill.  If only this would have continued even til today in 2015!
On September 14, 2001 President Bush declared the day the National Day of Prayer & Remembrance. Ironically on this date the Catholic Church celebrates the Triumph of the Holy Cross. It is also ironic that among the piles of dust, twisted steel beams and other debris, all that remained were 2 beams in the form of a Cross.

Was God telling us something? We cannot know for sure, but coincidences do not exist. Anything that happens in life has some reason.  It is Divine Providence at work.
But why would God allow this violent event to happen and use it to give a message?
Why the loss of innocent people?

Those questions can go either way. However, we do know God brings good out of evil.

God is not evil, nor does the presence of evil take away from his all good essence. Evil is the absence of good. God sometimes allows evil to happen in order to bring good out of it. That good can be anything He wills.

Unfortunately it does take a bad event to wake people up.
Why can't people be united, help each other every day?
Why does it take a tragedy to bring everyone together?
Sometimes kids don't listen when parents calmly tell them to stop doing something that will harm them. It isn't until mom and dad raises his/her voice or uses some other form of discipline that the child presents his/her attention.

Humanity as a whole being God's children are not any different. God does sometimes use a strong way to get humanity's attention. We must pray, meditate, and grow spiritually in order to see what God's will is. America needs to wake up and not go the way of the Greeks and Romans whose societies became so licentious that anything and everything was allowed. There was no moral/immoral distinction; everything was "good."

Today we see abortion where some argue till they turn blue claiming that it is a good.  They will distort Biology and Embryology, even ontology in order to present Abortion as a mere surgical procedure instead of the murder of a human being.

Others push for marriage between same sex couples and the nation's highest court legalized it.  Laws and regulations are being passed to allow transgendered people to use either bathroom. Transgendered people are viewed as courageous while veterans are ignored.  Now they even want to make pedophilia normal.  This is an abuse of freedom.  It is a complete neglect of morals and conscience.  Society is reverting back to primitive times.

Where is the line between sanity/insanity and morality/immorality? America must pray, follow the Lord's will be truly be a Nation under God.

Yesterday two rainbows appeared to be emanating from the World Trade Center site. This should serve as a reminder that we must be at peace with God and one another.  Osama Bin Laden was killed on May 1, 2011 and America has changed a lot since the attacks he planned and had carried out.  We have more security, have troops all over the globe.  However, have we changed our moral fabric which is dissolving?

Secularism is on the rise in America.  Democrats booed God at their convention in the last election and throughout America clubs promoting secularism and atheism are appearing in high schools and colleges.  They are confusing our youth and distorting God's word in order to make it seem as a 'fairy tale.'  Our nation is imploding.

As 2 Chronicles 7:14 says: " if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

Let us pray to the Lord, keep His will and Commandments alive. We must worship God, love God and one another; not attempt to make ourselves God and oppress our brothers and sisters born or preborn.  We must not attempt to rewrite the Natural Law and redefine sex and marriage in order to appease evil intrinsic sexual deviance.

Let us pray for the brave souls of September 11, 2001
