Olympics in Paris Mock Catholicism

The recent Paris Olympics opening ceremony has sparked a significant controversy due to a performance that many interpreted as a mockery of Christianity's Last Supper. The scene in question featured a character that resembled the Greek god Dionysus (though officials claim it was Neptune) accompanied by drag artists, which led to an outcry from various Christian communities and leaders. The organizers have since issued an apology, stating that there was no intention to disrespect any religious group and that the ceremony aimed to celebrate community tolerance and inclusivity.

The debate centers around the interpretation of a particular tableau during the ceremony, which some viewers felt bore a close resemblance to Leonardo da Vinci's iconic painting "The Last Supper," which depicts Jesus Christ and his apostles during the final meal before his crucifixion. The French Bishops’ Conference expressed that the scene was perceived as a "mockery and derision of Christianity".

In response to the backlash, Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps offered an apology to those who were offended and clarified that the artistic director, Thomas Jolly, did not draw inspiration from "The Last Supper" for the performance. Instead, the intent was to reflect on the absurdity of violence among human beings and to include everyone, celebrating the diversity and inclusivity that the Olympic spirit embodies.

This incident has opened up a broader conversation about the intersection of art, cultural representation, and respect for religious sentiments in global events such as the Olympics. It highlights the delicate balance organizers must maintain when showcasing artistic expression in a diverse and international context. The Paris Olympics committee's response and subsequent apology underscore the importance of sensitivity and the recognition of different perspectives in such a universal gathering.

The Olympics have long been a stage for not only athletic excellence but also for various controversies that have sparked debates, caused diplomatic tensions, and sometimes even overshadowed the games themselves. Here's a look at some of the most notable controversies in the history of the Olympics.

1. 1908 London Olympics - The Flag Incident

The 1908 Olympics in London saw a controversy when the Finnish team was not allowed to display their flag, as Finland was part of the Russian Empire at the time. This incident was a precursor to the complex interplay of nationalism and international sports.

2. 1912 Stockholm Olympics - Jim Thorpe's Disqualification

American athlete Jim Thorpe was stripped of his gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon after it was discovered he had played professional baseball before the Olympics, violating the amateurism rules of the time. The medals were posthumously reinstated in 1983.

3. 1968 Mexico City Olympics - Black Power Salute

One of the most iconic images of the Olympics is the Black Power salute by American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos during the medal ceremony for the 200-meter dash. Their gesture was a protest against racial discrimination in the United States and had significant repercussions.

4. 1972 Munich Olympics - The Munich Massacre

The Munich Olympics were marred by the tragic Munich massacre, where eleven Israeli athletes and coaches were taken hostage and killed by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September.

5. 1980 and 1984 Olympics - The Boycotts

The 1980 Moscow Olympics were boycotted by 65 countries, led by the United States, in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In retaliation, the Soviet Union and 14 Eastern Bloc countries boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

6. 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics - Figure Skating Scandal

The figure skating pairs competition ended in controversy when the French judge admitted to being pressured into voting for the Russian pair over the Canadian pair, leading to a dual gold medal situation.

7. 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics - Russian Doping Scandal

The Rio Olympics were overshadowed by the revelation of a state-sponsored Russian doping program, resulting in the banning of many Russian athletes and a cloud of suspicion over the ones who were allowed to compete.

8. 2024 Paris Olympics - 'Last Supper' Controversy

The most recent controversy involves the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, which included a performance that drew comparisons to the Last Supper and was perceived by some as mocking Christianity. The organizers apologized for any offense caused.

These controversies reflect the myriad ways in which the Olympic Games intersect with broader social, political, and ethical issues. They serve as a reminder that while the Olympics aim to bring the world together through sport, they are not immune to the complexities of global affairs and human rights issues. For more detailed accounts of these and other Olympic controversies, you can explore various sources that document the history and impact of these events.

The event has gotten a massive backlash from Christians and several others including some atheists who condemned it.  Bishop Barron and others spoke out on social media against it. The Vatican and Pope Francis have yet to comment possibly seeking to be neutral or not give the planners of the opening any attention they are obviously seeking.**

**UPDATE: Pope Francis and the Vatican have recently condemned the opening ceremony:

The opening brought about many apocalyptic images, in particular a metallic horse that looks like what is described in the Book of Revelation.  There was a scene of a beheaded woman singing. Many Catholics became upset at this because they felt it was a mockery of Father Jacques Hamel, an 85-year-old priest who was beheaded during a Mass in France by an Islamic terrorist.

Ironically, this opening took place days after the closing of the Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis. It seems the devil was upset and staged a mockery of the Last Supper on a global stage.  What is interesting is that after the display in the opening, there was a massive power outage in Paris. The city was left in the dark with only the Church of the Sacre Coeur left illuminated.

It seems clear God was not happy. God will not be mocked, Scripture says!  For this to happen shortly after the vile display during the opening leaves us all amazed.

Would the Olympics in France, Paris dare to do such a vile display of the Islamic faith?  What are they afraid of?  Attacking the Catholic faith simply shows the Catholic Church is the One True Religion.  It is no wonder why Jews and Catholics are always attacked and persecuted.  They are the only two with a Covenant with God: the Old and the New.

Here are some videos of the event from Jaiden Forrest and several other Youtube accounts:
