The lesser of two evils simply cannot apply in this election because both candidates are equally against life as the Pope stated.  Trump in 2016 would have easily been the lesser of two evils, however, he has morphed into a different candidate than the one we saw in 2016. He seems more timid on issues and backtraced on pro-life issues. His main focus now is illegal migrants.  On the other hand, Harris is simply focused on abortion children. There is no concern for the economic troubles Americans are facing thanks to her partner President Biden, nor is there any concern for the elevated levels of crime and the influx of illegal immigrants and migrants.  Her focus is simply to abort children as if abortion would solve all the problems of the world!  It is just sickening!

As it stands, no Catholics can vote for either Trump or Harris and be Catholic.  They would be materially cooperative of both candidate's evils.  Both candidates have evil as their platform! 

Let us pray for Trump and Harris to change their minds to a more sane platform that supports life and focuses on the real problems Americans and the world are facing.

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B: A Child Like Jesus

The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time is a moment in the liturgical year that invites the faithful to pause and reflect on the profound teachings of the scriptures. For year B, the readings for this Sunday present a rich tapestry of wisdom, challenge, and encouragement that speak to the heart of Christian discipleship.

The first reading from the Book of Wisdom (Wis 2:12, 17-20) confronts us with the stark reality of the righteous person's life, who is often beset by the wicked. It is a poignant reminder of the suffering that can accompany fidelity to God's law and the courage required to stand firm in the face of adversity. This passage echoes the trials faced by many prophets and ultimately foreshadows the suffering of Christ himself.

The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 54:3-4, 5, 6, and 8) offers a response to the first reading, providing a prayerful refuge in God's protection. The psalmist's trust in God's saving power serves as a model for our own faith, especially when we face trials or feel surrounded by hostility.

The second reading from the Letter of James (Jas 3:16—4:3) addresses the community's internal conflicts, highlighting the destructive nature of jealousy and selfish ambition. James contrasts this with the "wisdom from above," which is pure, peaceable, and full of mercy. This passage challenges believers to cultivate peace within their communities and to seek God's wisdom in all things.

Finally, the Gospel according to Mark (Mk 9:30-37) presents a teaching moment between Jesus and his disciples. As they journey through Galilee, Jesus predicts his passion and resurrection, though his disciples do not understand. Children are important in life. Without them, no species can continue. This is why the Catholic Church has combated abortion and any dangers against children. Granted, some in the Church have failed to protect them against predators, but for the most part, most Catholics are on the right track in regard to defending children. Jesus says if someone receives a child they receive Him. This is a huge statement. Jesus compares a child to Himself. Children are innocent. While they are conceived with Original Sin, they are innocent. They are blank slates.  This is why adults are to blame when children go wayward. They are molded by adults to be adults. So if they behave badly, it is the fault of adults who associate with them directly. 

This is why we have to be innocent like Children.  There is a difference between being a child and being childish or immature acting in a feral way.  Jesus calls us to be humble and accepting like children are. We must also be patient and accepting of all children. Unfortunately, there are some clergy, religious, and lay people who frown upon children at Mass. They complain about the noises of babies and the antics of small children which can be distracting. Kicking them out or embarrassing their families is not the way to go.  In the early Church, we read in the New Testament how they had households. This means children were present.  Crying children at Mass is a sign that the Church is alive and continues to be reborn just like the sound of a crying baby at birth is a sign that there is new life. 

Any Catholic, clergy or not who has an issue with babies or children at Mass needs to get a mental health evaluation and spiritual direction.  I will be blunt on that.  The kids and their families are not the problem if the children are behaving in their natural state. We must do everything to protect children and be careful what we teach them and what they see from us.  Children are not conceived racists, sexists, rapists, killers, thieves and so on. This is learned behavior.  Again, we must be careful with children and what they see and hear from us.  

These readings collectively urge the faithful to reflect on the nature of true wisdom, the call to live righteously, and the importance of humility and service. They remind us that following Christ may lead to challenges and misunderstandings, but ultimately, it is a journey toward eternal life with God.

As we meditate on these scriptures, we are invited to examine our own lives in light of these teachings. Are we willing to stand for righteousness, even when it is difficult? Do we seek the wisdom that comes from God, or are we swayed by worldly ambitions? How do we embody the servant leadership that Jesus exemplifies?

The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time offers a moment for deep spiritual introspection and renewal. Perhaps a moe or rogue secret service agent, campaign worker or even the staff at the golf course may have tipped him off.  This has brought Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis to start his own investigation on what went on.

We respond to God's free grace with faith and put that faith into works. This is the model we are given in the New Testament and which the Church Fathers professed. 

The Gospel of Mark 8:27-35 presents a pivotal moment where Jesus asks His disciples to recognize Him as the Messiah. It is a profound teaching on self-denial and the hardships of following Him, promising life to those who sacrifice for His sake. This passage is central to understanding the cost of discipleship and the paradoxical truth that in losing our life for Christ's sake, we find it.

He stressed that God is for everyone, and thus, we are all God's children, irrespective of our religious affiliations.  He said:

“Every religion is a way to arrive at God. There are different languages to arrive at God but God is God for all. But my God is more important than your god, is that true? There is only 1 God & each of has a language to arrive at God. Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, they are different paths.”

These words have caused an uproar on social media with some Catholics and Protestants accusing the pope of heresy an denying Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior.  Some priests are even saying Pope Francis is not a valid pope and others are calling him the "False Prophet,"  "The Beast" and even the "AntiChrist."  We will address this in a bit.

He encouraged the youth, representing various faiths, to not be insular but to take risks and move forward with hope, even amidst mistakes and shortcomings. Some Catholics and others are attacking Pope Francis for his comments on religion. The truth is that Jesus said it first: 

John 10:16 "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." 

 

The Catechism of the Catholic Church also says:

843 The Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as "a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life."

846 How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers? Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body: Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.

847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church: Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation. 
848 "Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."

Thank you very much for your words!

Three things that you said struck me: “armchair critics,” “comfort zone,” and “technology” – the duty to use it but also the risks involved. This is the speech that I had prepared, but now I will speak [spontaneously]!

Young people are courageous and like to seek the truth but they have to be careful not to become what you referred to as “armchair critics” with endless words. A young person must be a critical thinker, and it is not good never to be critical. But you must be constructive in criticism, because there is a destructive criticism, which only makes a lot of complaints but does not offer a new way forward. I ask all young people, each of you: are you critical thinkers? Do you have the courage to criticize but also the courage to let others criticize you? Because, if you criticize, then someone else will criticize you. This is sincere dialogue between young people.

Young people must have the courage to build, to move forward and go out of their “comfort zones”. A young person who chooses always to spend his or her time in “comfort” is a young person who becomes fat! Not fatter in body, but fatter in mind! That is why I say to young people, “Take risks, go out! Do not be afraid!”. Fear is a dictatorial attitude that paralyzes you. It is true that young people often make mistakes, many mistakes, and it would be good if each one of us – if each of you – could think about how many times you have made mistakes. We make mistakes because we started walking and we make mistakes on the journey. This is normal; the important thing to realize is that you have made mistakes. Let us see who can answer my question: What is worse, making a mistake because I started to walk or not making a mistake because I stayed at home? Everyone, the latter! A young person who does not take risks, who is afraid of making mistakes, is already old! Do you understand this?

You have also talked about the media. Today there are so many options, so many possibilities for using the media, cell phone, or television. I would like to ask you: is it good to use media or is it not good? Let us think about this. What is a young person who does not use media like? He or she is closed. What about young people who live totally enslaved to the media, what are they like? They are lost. All young people should use the media, but in a manner that can help us move forward, not in a way that can enslave us. Understood? Do you agree or disagree?

One of the things that has impressed me most about the young people here is your capacity for interfaith dialogue. This is very important because if you start arguing, “My religion is more important than yours...,” or “Mine is the true one, yours is not true....,” where does this lead? Somebody answer. [A young person answers, “Destruction”.] That is correct. Religions are seen as paths trying to reach God. I will use an analogy, they are like different languages that express the divine. But God is for everyone, and therefore, we are all God’s children. “But my God is more important than yours!”. Is this true? There is only one God, and religions are like languages that try to express ways to approach God. Some Sikh, some Muslim, some Hindu, some Christian. Understood? Yet, interfaith dialogue among young people takes courage. The age of youth is the age of courage, but you can misuse this courage to do things that will not help you. Instead, you should have courage to move forward and to dialogue.

One thing that helps a lot with dialogue is respect. I will tell you one thing. I don’t know if it happens here, in this city, but in other cities it happens that among young people something bad occurs: bullying. I ask you: who is the bravest to tell me what they think about bullying? [Some young people respond] Thank you! Everyone has provided a definition of bullying but with a different aspect. Whether it is verbal or physical bullying, it is always an aggression. Always. Just think about what happens in schools or children’s groups: bullying targets those who are weaker. For example, a disabled boy or girl. Instead, we saw here this beautiful dance with disabled children! Each one of us has our own abilities and limitations. Do we all have abilities? [Answer: “Yes!”] Do we all have some limitations? [Answer: “Yes!”] Even the Pope? Yes, all, all! As we have our limitations, we must respect the disabilities of others. Do you agree? This is important. Why do I say this? Because overcoming these things helps in your interfaith dialogue since it is built upon respect for others. This is very important.

Any further questions? No? I want to thank you and repeat what Raaj told us: to do everything we can so as to maintain a courageous attitude and promote a space where young people can go and dialogue. This is because your dialogue is one that creates a path, and that leads the way forward. If you dialogue as young people, you will also dialogue as adults; you will dialogue as citizens, and as politicians. I would like to tell you something about history: with every dictatorship in history, the first thing it does is to cut off dialogue.

I thank you for these questions, and I am glad to meet you young people, to meet these brave, almost “shameless ones,” you are good! My wish is that all of you young people will go forward with hope, and not go backwards! Take risks! Otherwise, you will grow “fatter”! God bless you and pray for me, I do for you.

And now, in silence, let us pray for each other. In silence.

May God bless all of us. In the future, when you are no longer young, but you are elderly and grandparents, teach all these things to your children. God bless you and pray for me, don’t forget! But pray for, not against!

As we can see, the pope was using an analogy with the concept of language to explain how regardless of faith, we still communicate with the One and Same God.  There is only ONE God and thousands of ways man has tried to understand Him, name Him, and communicate to Him.  What the pope said is not heresy but are the facts.  He never said all religion saves, religion as a concept saves, or that all religions directly lead to God. 

As Jesus stated, He has other sheep that are not of the main flock, but they still hear Him.  These are those outside of the Catholic Church.  God is the Divine Mercy. He does not wish to condemn anyone. He wants all to be saved.  He understands that not everyone has been blessed with the Gospel or the teachings of the Catholic Church. This is our fault for not evangelizing enough!  

These people of these other faiths and no faith can achieve salvation as the Catechism states if they are not aware of the normative way of salvation in Jesus Christ via His Catholic Church.  The pope was speaking to a group of youth from different faiths. He has to be prudent. He cannot say that his religion is better than theirs or that His God is better. This would be fruitless. It will become a debate instead of a dialog.  

Jesus Himself was prudent when speaking to the Pharisees and others. He did not condemn their religion but had a dialog with them. Similarly, when questioned by Pilate, He did not arrogantly announce that He is the King of the Jews and came to save the world. He remained silent most of the time.  Jesus was not a proselytizer.  

It is sad to see some Catholics including priests attack the Holy Father. It goes to show how ignorant many Catholics are of the Catholic faith, including those who are ordained.  They really do not understand the faith and accept a false narrative of the Catholic faith.

Catholic Origins of 'Friday the 13th'


The Enigma of Friday the 13th: Tracing its Roots and Cultural Impact

Friday the 13th, a date often shrouded in superstition and mystery, has intrigued and unnerved people for centuries. Its association with bad luck and ominous occurrences has permeated popular culture, leaving many to wonder about its origins and the reasons behind the fear it incites.  Many of us born after the 70s associate with the fictional horror character Jason Vorhees who terrorizes kids at Camp Crystal Lake.  While the exact origins of the superstition are unclear, several theories offer insight into how this date may have come to be regarded with such trepidation.

One prevalent theory suggests a connection to the Christian faith, particularly events surrounding the Last Supper and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is believed that there were 13 individuals present at the Last Supper—Jesus and his 12 apostles—with Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, being the 13th guest. The subsequent crucifixion of Jesus occurred on a Friday, which is referred to as Good Friday in the Christian tradition. This sequence of events is thought to have given rise to the superstition that having 13 guests at a table was a bad omen and that Friday was an inauspicious day for significant events.

The number 13 itself has long been considered unlucky in various cultures, often because it follows 12, a number traditionally associated with completeness (12 months in a year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles of Jesus). The deviation from this sense of completeness may contribute to the unease surrounding the number.

Historical events have also played a role in cementing the day's notoriety. One such event is the mass arrest and execution of the Knights Templar, a powerful Christian military order, which took place on Friday, October 13, 1307. King Philip IV of France, in a move that would devastate the order, orchestrated the arrest of hundreds of Templars on charges ranging from heresy to idolatry.

The Knights Templar: Monks, Warriors, and Bankers of the Medieval World

The Knights Templar, officially known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, stand out as one of the most fascinating and enigmatic orders in history. Founded around 1119, they were endorsed by the Catholic Church in 1129. Their origin lies in the aftermath of the First Crusade, a time when the safety of Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land was precarious at best.

The Templars began as a small group bound by a singular noble cause: to protect those pilgrims traveling to sacred sites. Under the guidance of Hugues de Payens, the order established a base on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, which lent them their name. They were a unique combination of knight and monk, a hybrid of martial prowess and devout religious life that had not been seen before.

Their military might was legendary; Templar knights were among the most skilled fighters of the Crusades. They adhered to a strict code of conduct and discipline that forbade retreat unless vastly outnumbered. Not all members were warriors, though. The order also consisted of non-combatant brothers who supported the knights through various means, such as acquiring resources and managing the order's substantial economic ventures.

The Templars were pioneers in establishing a form of banking that would allow pilgrims to deposit funds in their home countries and withdraw them in the Holy Land. This system not only provided security for the pilgrims' assets but also contributed to the Templars' immense wealth and influence. They became key financial players, offering loans to monarchs and nobles, and at the height of their power, they owned vast tracts of land across Europe and the Middle East, a fleet of ships, and even the entire island of Cyprus.

Their distinctive attire, a white habit emblazoned with a red cross, became an iconic symbol of the Crusades. The Templars' strict lifestyle, which included vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, set them apart from other orders. They were also known for their veneration of the Virgin Mary, which was central to their spiritual life.

Despite their pious beginnings and considerable contributions to the Crusades, the Templars' wealth and power eventually aroused suspicion and envy. In 1307, King Philip IV of France, deeply indebted to the order and covetous of their riches, took drastic action. He orchestrated a mass arrest of Templars on charges of heresy, blasphemy, and various other fabricated crimes. The once revered knights were subjected to torture and forced confessions, and many were burned at the stake. In 1312, under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement V officially dissolved the order.

The fall of the Knights Templar was as dramatic as their rise. They left behind a legacy shrouded in mystery and legend, inspiring countless stories and conspiracy theories. The Templars have been linked to the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, and various other relics and myths. Their true story, however, is one of a group of devout men who dedicated their lives to their faith and the protection of their fellow Christians, leaving an indelible mark on history.

The Knights Templar's story is a poignant reminder of the transient nature of power and the enduring allure of mystery. Their legacy continues to captivate historians, treasure hunters, and the public imagination, ensuring that the Templars will be remembered for centuries to come. Whether as valiant crusaders, pioneering bankers, or victims of a tragic downfall, the Knights Templar remain an enduring symbol of the medieval world.

Cultural variations of the superstition also exist. In Spain, for instance, Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky due to its association with Mars, the Roman god of war. In Italy, the number 17 is feared, as the Roman numeral XVII can be rearranged to spell "VIXI," translating to "my life is over" in Latin.

Over time, these stories and beliefs have been perpetuated through literature, movies, and media, reinforcing the idea that Friday the 13th is a day of bad luck. Whether one subscribes to these superstitions or not, the mystique of Friday the 13th continues to captivate our imaginations and spark conversations around the world.

The fear of the number 13 even has a name—triskaidekaphobia—and it's a testament to the power of cultural narratives and human psychology that a simple date can evoke such widespread apprehension. As we continue to explore the origins and implications of this day, it serves as a fascinating example of how history, religion, and culture can intertwine to create enduring legends and traditions that span generations.
