The Pope's words come at a time when immigration is a contentious issue globally, sparking intense debate and varied reactions. His call for a global governance of migration based on justice, fraternity, and solidarity challenges individuals and nations to reflect on their responsibilities towards migrants. He emphasizes that indifference and rejection are the true dangers migrants face, not just the perilous journeys they undertake.
Pope Francis' appeal is not just to political leaders but to everyone, encouraging a collective effort to combat human trafficking and support migrants. He highlights the role of prayer and moral support in addition to direct action, suggesting that everyone has a part to play in addressing this humanitarian crisis.
The Pope's message is a powerful reminder of the shared humanity that binds us all and the ethical obligations that come with it. It's a call to look beyond borders and politics and to see the faces of individuals and families in desperate need of help. As the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis' words carry significant weight, and it remains to be seen how his call for action will influence the global conversation and policies on migration.
As usual, those who subscribe to conservatism took to heart the pope's works and attacked him. Among the vitriolic attitude were Catholics including armchair pundits Taylor R. Marshall who tweeted the typical "Vatican has walls" meme which was created in an attempt to make the pope look like a hypocrite. He also doubled down by asking how many migrants the Vatican has taken in.
Shame on Taylor Marshall and other Catholics for pushing this inhumane and anti-Christ rhetoric. Jesus said to love one another. Sacred Scripture says to welcome the stranger (see: Leviticus 19:33-34). Pope Francis was just echoing the message found in Sacred Scripture, the Word of God!
However, it is important to note that the Catholic Church does not teach an open borders all come in doctrine. The Church is clear that nations should help migrants, illegal immigrants, illegal migrants, refugees, illegal aliens, undocumented person, whatever term you want to use. However, the Church states clearly that nations have a right to protect their borders, have a process of entry and that those entering the nation must respect the hosting nation. See below:
This video has prompted a lot of reaction from social media users, most condemning it while some celebrating Spain for doing this. Among them are clergy from many religious denominations including Calvin Robinson, a self-professed "priest" of the "Old Catholic" denomination (see:Fr Calvin Robinson on X: "Migrant dinghy crushed by Spanish police boat. It can be done. The Spaniards know how to Reconquesta. https://t.co/2FBaPEmIhf" / X)
