The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis is going through a lot right now. Archbishop John Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop Lee Anthony Piche who headed the archdiocese were just removed by Pope Francis. The Pope accepted their resignation. Nienstedt was adamant numerous times regarding his role as archbishop stating he would not step down.
However, many of the clergy and lay faithful wanted him out. He and Piche were charged by Minnesota prosecutors for failing to protect children. The revelation came about when the diocesan canon lawyer-turned-whistleblower Jennifer Haaselberger revealed the covering up of clergy sexual crimes and the refusal of the archbishop of following the USSCB's zero-tolerance pledge. Nienstedt himself was accused of touching a young boy's buttocks when taking photos after the young boy's Confirmation. However, no charges were filed because there was no evidence that this actually occurred. Thank God Pope Francis is continuing his commitment to cleaning out the Church from this fifth.
