Twitter's Dick Costolo Resigns



Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has stepped down effective July 1st of this year.  Jack Dorsey, Twitter's co-founder will be the interim chief until someone is selected for the position.





















Costolo has faced a lot of criticism as CEO, namely because of lack of company growth and Twitter trolls. Other social networks have amounted over a billion members while Twitter has only gathered roughly 300 million, mostly from the United States of America.  Moreover, Twitter has had a lot of difficulties dealing with trolls forcing many to delete their accounts including the daughter of the late Robin Williams (see: http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/zelda-williams-quits-twitter-instagram-after-robin-williams-death-2014138).  I can attest to this myself being constantly targeted by trolls who pretend to be atheists.  These trolls stalk users, send offensive, vulgar and abusive messages. Simply blocking them does nothing as they can create other accounts and even view your profile using a cell phone web browser application even though you have them blocked.

Twitter's support which is supposed to handle reports regarding abusive accounts seldom takes action. Before, an actual individual used to reply to complaints.  One could go on zendesk and view the progress of the report.  Now, an automated response is sent which asks the person filing a report to provide a timeline of abuse, tweet links as evidence of the abuse and any information regarding other accounts that join in the abuse.  When you do as the email states, you get a response the next day stating:






The if you reply sending the evidence and rules the abuser broke, Support from Twitter will send you the same response again. You then get the feeling that either the person replying is a moron or not a human being. Who else would continue stating that they are "unable to take action on the account given that [they] count not determine a clear violation??"

In the above response, they acknowledge the evidence you have sent, but then excuse the account you reported as "currently not violating the Twitter rules.."  The abusive account(s) are then left to continue their abuse unpunished.  This then discourages Twitter users who deleted their accounts because Twitter does nothing to stop abuse. The whole system sucks!  Dick Costolo put it that way himself in a company memo where he wrote “We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years.”   

He also wrote, "I'm frankly ashamed of how poorly we've dealt with this issue during my tenure as CEO. It's absurd. There's no excuse for it. I take full responsibility for not being more aggressive on this front. It's nobody else's fault but mine, and it's embarrassing.  We're going to start kicking these people off right and left and making sure that when they issue their ridiculous attacks, nobody hears them."

Ironically, news of his resignation made Twitter's stock rise 8% showing how shareholders were happy to learn of the news.  Twitter has a lot of potential in many areas. However, many changes have to be done if it is to be a viable social network and not flop like Myspace was a few years ago.  

First, they need to do something about the trolls. The @support system needs to be replaced with actual people who read complaints. If the three credit bureaus can attend to the millions of disputes regarding credit from customers, then Twitter Inc. can surely hire enough people to attend to each complaint and respond appropriately.  I would volunteer to do the job for free!  















Another suggestion that may turn off trolls from using Twitter to harass is by posting their IP location and ISP in tweets.  By doing this, anyone who gets their tweets will know exactly where they are and who they purchase internet services from.  This can serve for future references in case the police need to be notified and for any legal proceedings that may follow for defamation, stalking etc.  I am currently pursuing legal action against some trolls who have been stalking me and targeting me for abuse for years. The lawyers were sent over 30 pages of tweets showing the abuse, defamation, and libel.

It goes on and on and on, but you get the point.  Second, they need to add better features.  Hopefully, the new CEO will take care of this troll problem otherwise Twitter users will leave Twitter for a safer network.  In the meantime, please block and report these accounts above.  They are just insignificant trolls who hide under the guise of atheism.  Note that they attack me, call me names and what not, yet not one shows up to engage me in real-time on Sacerdotus Hangouts: Atheist Open Mic.  They run and hide behind their computer screens.
