The Intriguing Tale of Asteroids Not Hitting Earth

The Intriguing Tale of Asteroids Not Hitting Earth

According to scientists, asteroid 2024 YR4 is no longer a threat to Earth.  The probability has shrunken to zero.  However, they are now saying that it will hit our Moon.

When it comes to the fascinating world of astronomy, there's an enduring interest in the cosmic rocks known as asteroids. These celestial bodies, while relatively small in the grand scheme of the universe, often capture our imagination—sometimes in thrilling ways and other times with existential dread. But amidst the countless discussions about the potential hazards of asteroids, there's a lesser-celebrated yet equally fascinating story: how many of them don't hit Earth.

The Journey of an Asteroid

Asteroids are rocky remnants from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. These space rocks can vary greatly in size, from tiny pebble-sized particles to massive bodies hundreds of kilometers in diameter. Most of these asteroids are found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but some make their way into the inner solar system, posing a potential threat to Earth.
Earth's Cosmic Shield: The Atmosphere

One of the most remarkable aspects of our planet is its atmosphere, which acts as a cosmic shield. When an asteroid enters Earth's atmosphere, it encounters intense friction and heat, causing it to burn up. This phenomenon, often witnessed as a meteor or "shooting star," means that many asteroids disintegrate before they even reach the ground.

Close Encounters of the Asteroid Kind

Throughout history, Earth has experienced countless close encounters with asteroids. Thanks to advances in astronomy and space technology, we can now track these near-Earth objects (NEOs) with impressive accuracy. NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) is dedicated to monitoring and tracking potentially hazardous asteroids, ensuring that we are well-prepared for any potential impact scenarios.
The Role of Gravitational Influences

The intricate dance of celestial bodies in our solar system is governed by gravity. The gravitational pull of planets, particularly Jupiter, plays a significant role in altering the paths of asteroids. Jupiter's immense gravity can act as a shield, deflecting asteroids away from the inner solar system and, consequently, Earth.
Success Stories: Missions to Study and Redirect Asteroids

Humanity's curiosity and technological prowess have led to numerous missions aimed at studying asteroids up close. NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, for example, successfully collected samples from the asteroid Bennu, providing valuable insights into the building blocks of our solar system. Additionally, space agencies worldwide are exploring methods to redirect potentially hazardous asteroids, ensuring that we can prevent any future collisions.
The Odds of Impact

While the idea of an asteroid impact may seem like the stuff of science fiction, the odds of a catastrophic collision are relatively low. Astronomers estimate that significant impact events occur on a timescale of millions of years. Nevertheless, the ongoing efforts of scientists and space agencies ensure that we remain vigilant and prepared for any potential threats from space.
Conclusion: Celebrating the Cosmic Dance

As we gaze up at the night sky, it's awe-inspiring to think about the countless asteroids that pass by our planet without incident. These close encounters remind us of the intricate cosmic dance that unfolds in our solar system. While the potential dangers of asteroids are real, so too are the efforts to understand and mitigate these risks. In the end, the story of asteroids not hitting Earth is a testament to the beauty and complexity of our universe, and a reminder of the importance of continued exploration and scientific discovery.

So while the Asteroid 2024 YR4 is no longer a threat to Earth and is said to be hitting the Moon now, we are still not out of danger.  If the Moon is struck, there will most likely be debris that the Earth will pull towards itself with its gravity.  This debris will come in different shapes and sizes.  Moreover, our Moon may be moved out of orbit and may bring it to collide with the Earth or have a different orbit which will cause havoc with tidal waves and tsunamis.  Furthermore, if the Moon leaves Earth's orbit completely or gradually, this will cause Earth to rotate faster causing earthquakes, volcanic activity, and a shorter day.

So next time you spot a shooting star, take a moment to appreciate the cosmic forces at play, and the remarkable journey of those asteroids that simply pass us by. 🌠

The Asteroid of 2023 and the Biblical Wormwood: A Tale of Cosmic Catastrophe

The Asteroid of 2023 and the Biblical Wormwood: A Tale of Cosmic Catastrophe

In recent years, the world has been captivated by the potential threat of an asteroid impact, reminiscent of the biblical prophecy of Wormwood. This post delves into the fascinating intersection of science and scripture, exploring the asteroid that made headlines in 2023 and the ancient prophecy of Wormwood from the Book of Revelation.

The Asteroid of 2023: A Cosmic Threat

In 2023, astronomers discovered an asteroid that quickly garnered attention due to its potential to impact Earth. Dubbed **2023 YR4**, this asteroid was estimated to be between 130 and 300 feet wide, large enough to cause significant damage if it were to collide with our planet. The asteroid's trajectory was closely monitored by NASA and other space agencies, with initial calculations suggesting a small but non-negligible chance of impact.

The potential consequences of such an impact were sobering. Scientists warned that an impact could release energy equivalent to that of a nuclear bomb, causing widespread destruction within a 30-mile radius. The asteroid's path was projected to bring it close to Earth in 2028, providing a crucial window for further observations and potential deflection strategies.

The Biblical Prophecy of Wormwood

The concept of Wormwood is rooted in the Book of Revelation, where it is described as a star that falls from heaven, poisoning a third of the Earth's waters and causing many to die. The name "Wormwood" is derived from a bitter herb, symbolizing the bitterness and suffering that would accompany its fall - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormwood_%28Bible%29).

Interpretations of Wormwood vary widely, with some viewing it as a literal celestial event, while others see it as a metaphor for political or spiritual turmoil - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormwood_%28Bible%29). Historicist interpretations link Wormwood to significant historical figures or events, such as the Huns' invasion of Europe or the heretical teachings of Pelagius - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormwood_%28Bible%29).

Connecting the Dots: Science and Scripture

The discovery of 2023 YR4 sparked renewed interest in the biblical prophecy of Wormwood, prompting discussions about the parallels between scientific predictions and ancient prophecies. While the asteroid's chances of impact were relatively low, the potential for catastrophe resonated with the apocalyptic imagery of Wormwood.

The intersection of science and scripture highlights the enduring human fascination with the unknown and the search for meaning in cosmic events. Whether viewed through the lens of prophecy or science, the story of 2023 YR4 and Wormwood serves as a reminder of our vulnerability to the forces of the universe and the importance of vigilance in monitoring potential threats.

Conclusion

As we continue to explore the mysteries of the cosmos, the tale of the asteroid of 2023 and the biblical Wormwood reminds us of the delicate balance between scientific discovery and spiritual interpretation. By studying these phenomena, we gain a deeper understanding of our place in the universe and the potential challenges that lie ahead.

NASA: Asteroid 2016 NF23 Potentially Hazardous to the Earth

NASA says a 500-foot wide asteroid is approaching Earth and can be potentially hazardous. The asteroid was given the designation 2016 NF23 and is traveling at about 20,000 miles per hour. This speed is faster than the speed current rockets travel. It is estimated that the asteroid will be closest to the Earth on August 29, 2018.

The asteroid is a bit larger than the Pyramids at Giza, Egypt. Even at this size, the asteroid can pose a great threat to life on Earth. At the speed it is traveling, it can cause a catastrophic collision that can cause atomic-like shock waves that can wipe out cities and cause dust to block the Sun in the atmosphere which will bring plant life to die and those that depend on it.  This will be a chain reaction of death which is believed to what have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.

However, there is no need for alarm. Asteroids like this pass by Earth all the time.  Many times, they are not even noticed until they have already passed by!  Earth is protected by the larger planets Jupiter and Saturn. Their large masses allow for a stronger gravitational pull which slings asteroids away from the Earth.

Oumuamua An Alien Spaceship or Probe

Last month I posted about an asteroid named Oumuamua which is shaped like a cigar and passed by the Earth in October of this year see: http://www.sacerdotus.com/2017/11/cigar-looking-asteroid-from-another.html. The asteroid itself was fascinating and had scientists surprised. This was mainly because of the shape and the origin of the asteroid which came from another star system.

However, some scientists are going a bit further. They are claiming that this asteroid may have been an extraterrestrial spaceship or probe. Even renown physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking believes this object may not be a natural creation. The rationale behind this is the manner in which the object is traveling and its shape. According to them, Oumuamua is moving independently of our sun's gravitational pull. Asteroids that travel in our solar system or any system with a star get caught in that star's gravitational pull.

However, Oumuamua seems to have a propulsion that operates against the gravity of the sun. This is extremely odd and may indicate that this may be an artificial device with engines. Moreover, the way it is tumbling in space looks like a ship whose engines have been damaged. The shape of the object is also interesting. A cylindrical shape would be a better shape for a ship to have in order to travel in space. It produces less friction and will travel faster. This is why our own planes and rockets are cylindrical in shape. Scientists will be scanning Oumuamua for any signals.

Scientists will use the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope to listen for any radio signals for about 10 hours. This news is fascinating and had me excited. To learn that we are not alone in the universe in regards to physical life would be amazing news. However, I am extremely skeptical that this asteroid is an alien vessel or probe. Perhaps these scientists have been watching Star Trek the Voyage Home where a cylindrical probe visited Earth looking for whales.

As with most things in science, they are based on hypothesis or guesses. I was disappointed to learn that there were no alien signals detected emanating from Oumuamua. This means that Oumuamua is just an asteroid. There is no technology on or in it, no engines, no circuitry or passengers. The asteroid is probably the remains of a planet far away. Its reddish hue may be iron deposits and maybe a piece of a planet's tectonic plates. I think those scientists who made conclusions that Oumuamua was an alien ship should be more careful. Their reputation is on the line. If it looks like a rock in space and acts like a rock in space, then it most likely is a rock in space! I seriously doubt that an advanced alien civilization will travel in an asteroid. What are they, the Flintstones alien race?!?

Cigar Looking Asteroid from another Star System Visits Earth

The Universe is full of a lot of interesting and fascinating things. We are always discovering new things about it.  Its immense size will always keep us curious. This is because the possibility of finding new things is nearly infinite due to the universe's size. We are just scratching the surface in regards to space exploration and scanning the cosmos. There is still a lot to learn.

Well, recently we were visited by an asteroid from another solar system. It is possibly the first object in space that is not native to our own solar system. This fact alone is interesting but there is another fact that has astronomers surprised. This asteroid is extremely strange. It is cigar-shaped and traveling extremely fast at about 85,000 miles per hour and is 124 million miles away from the Earth. The asteroid is rocky and has a reddish hue.  Scientists named it "Oumuamua." The word is Hawaiian and means "A messenger from afar arriving first."

Scientists are trying to learn as much about it as possible.  However, it will not be in our solar system for long.  It is scheduled to pass by Jupiter in May of next year, Saturn in 2019 and eventually leave our solar system and travel to the constellation of Pegasus.  Studying this asteroid may give us more information about other systems and how they formed.  It may also have clues as to whether life exists elsewhere in the universe.

Asteroid 2004 BL86 Passing By Earth

An asteroid is coming to Earth!  Run for your life!
Just kidding.

There is an asteroid named 2004 BL86 which is about the size of a large mountain (1,800 feet) passing by Earth today, but it is over 700,000 miles away from us which is relatively 3 times the distance between the Earth and its satellite, the Moon. This will be the last time until 2027 when another asteroid gets too close to the Earth.  Asteroid 2004 BL86 will not come back to visit us until another 200 years.

Astronomers and others are excited by this "visit" as it will be a great opportunity to study an asteroid "up close."  We have little knowledge on asteroids, so having one in our "back yard" will bring add more information to what we have already.  The asteroid can be viewed with a telescope and even binocolars, so get them out and clean them up!  Unfortunately, most of the northeast will not be able to see it as we are in a Blizzard warning and will have cloud cover.

The asteroid will not hit Earth, so do not panic.  Enjoy the show in space if you can view it!

UPDATE: 9:23 PM

Asteroid 2004 BL86 has just passed Earth and was discovered to have its own moon! It is estimated to be about 230 feet.  Unfortunately, those of us in the northeastern part of the United States were not able to view the asteroid due to blizzard Juno.

Asteroid Passing By

Today asteroid 1998 QE2 is passing by planet Earth at a very close distance.  It will be at its closest at around 4-5:00 PM today EST time.  The asteroid was observed to have its own "moon" orbiting it.  It poses no threat to Earth, so do not panic nor sell your stocks and other items.  This visit from one of our many millions of neighbors will help us learn more about these large bodies traveling through space.

The asteroid will be nearly impossible to see without a power telescope, but you can view it here: http://www.space.com/19195-night-sky-planets-asteroids-webcasts.html
