Vatican releases first photos of Pope Leo XIV celebrating Mass at Gemelli Hospital after lung cancer surgery.
On October 16, 2026, the Vatican released the first images of Pope Leo XIV since his October 13 surgery to remove a cancerous portion of his right lung. The photos show the 71-year-old pontiff standing at a makeshift altar on the hospital’s 10th floor, wearing green vestments, celebrating Mass.
He presided alone over the liturgy, distributed Communion to off-duty medical staff and Vatican Gendarmerie members present, and delivered a homily thanking doctors, nurses, and orderlies “for the work they do every day taking care of the sick in their fragility, and in a particular way what they had done for him.”
Doctors reported that blood tests and a chest X-ray confirmed “continued improvement” in his condition. He is receiving physiotherapy and is able to carry out normal daily activities independently. He is expected to remain at Gemelli until around October 20.
