The Queen was accompanied by her husband Prince Philip. Queen Elizabeth is no stranger to Rome having met five different Popes since 1951. She is the head governor of the Anglican denomination and has done much to better the relationship between the Church of Rome and the Anglicans.
The meeting was heavily scrutinized by the meeting due to the fact that Pope Francis as an Argentinian was critical of the dispute over the Falkland islands. Nevertheless, both met and had a warm encounter exchanging gifts. The Queen gave the Pope some honey, jams and a bottle of whiskey. The Pope gave her an antique parchment which dated May 1679.
It seems the protocols were relaxed because the Queen wore purple instead of black.
