They did, and emails, addresses and payments linking to Josh Duggar were found. Many online jumped to attack Josh Duggar and his "family values" including the has-been former talk show host Montel Williams who described conservative Christians such as the Duggars as "freaks" and who became defensive with me when I questioned his tweet (see: http://www.sacerdotus.com/2015/08/montel-attacks-christians-sacerdotus.html). I had to shut down this fool and remind him about semantics.
Well, Josh finally admitted that he did in fact committed adultery against his wife and is a porn addict. In a statement, he said:
"I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife.
I am so ashamed of the double life that I have been living and am grieved for the hurt, pain and disgrace my sin has caused my wife and family, and most of all Jesus and all those who profess faith in Him.
I brought hurt and a reproach to my family, close friends and the fans of our show with my actions that happened when I was 14-15 years old, and now I have re-broken their trust.
The last few years, while publicly stating I was fighting against immorality in our country, I was hiding my own personal failings.
As I am learning the hard way, we have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. I deeply regret all hurt I have caused so many by being such a bad example.
I humbly ask for your forgiveness. Please pray for my precious wife Anna and our family during this time."
Josh was part of the Family Research Council and spoke strongly against adulterers, divorce, same-sex marriage, gays and abortion. He considered these an affront to the family. However, he clearly was hurting the family as an institution; first as a minor by touching his sisters and babysitter inappropriately and second by cheating on his wife. Rumors are now circulating that he may have used a fake Facebook profile to cheat as well.
This is unfortunately indeed. However, it is not new. A recent survey (Barna Group) supplemented previous studies showing that Christians (Protestant) have high levels of addiction to pornography. Some speculate that the heavy restrictions due to fundamentalist Puritanistic views take a toll on the psychological well-being of Protestant Christians. This is not a critique of the Christian faith, but rather how it is lived by these Christians.
We must pray for Josh and his family. He has brought a lot of shame to his family and they must be going through a lot of pain right now especially his wife and children. We must forgive him and ask God to give him the grace to fight his inner demons. He is clearly mentally disturbed and needs to seek both professional and spiritual help.
