The last days of August and first days of September delivered a mix of spectacle and subtlety: a flagship NASA observatory left Earth, physicists underground recorded a single puzzling event, and paleontologists found traces of life where few expected them. Here is a tour of the stories that defined the week.
A new eye on the dark universe
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on August 30 from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. The observatory carries a Hubble-class mirror that originally sat unused after an intelligence program—and a field of view about 100 times wider than Hubble’s. Its job is to map dark energy, hunt exoplanets by microlensing, and survey the sky at a scale previous flagship telescopes could not match. By week’s end it was on its way to a stable orbit around the Sun–Earth L2 point.
One event, not yet a discovery
On September 1, the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) collaboration reported a single interaction in its xenon tank a mile beneath South Dakota. The flash looked like the kind of scatter expected from a weakly interacting massive particle—the long-sought WIMP candidate for dark matter. The team was careful: one event is not a discovery. It is a hint that will either fade with more data or become one of the decade’s biggest physics stories.
Antarctica’s first mammal track
On a remote Antarctic island, researchers described a single fossilized footprint pressed into volcanic mud about 55 million years ago. It is the first known mammal track from the continent and the earliest evidence of a predatory mammal walking there. The print is a reminder that Antarctica was once a very different place—forested, warmer, and home to animals we still barely know.
The thylacine was not a wolf in marsupial clothing
A new analysis of Tasmanian tiger skulls argued that the extinct thylacine’s hunting style has no clean modern analogue. For decades it was treated as a textbook case of convergent evolution with wolves and dogs. The biomechanics tell a more idiosyncratic story: a predator that combined a wide gape with a bite that does not map neatly onto living carnivores. Convergence, in this case, was only skin deep.
Mercury’s hidden metal
Planetary scientists in Germany published a refined map of silica across Mercury’s surface and inferred that metal-rich material may sit just beneath the crust. Combined with later work on the planet’s shrinkage—now estimated at nearly 19 kilometers across as its interior cooled—the picture of Mercury is of a world that is both more metallic and more contracted than textbooks long assumed.
Health: keto, pregnancy, and antibiotics
A diet comparison study found that, for the same amount of weight loss, a ketogenic diet outperformed Mediterranean and low-fat approaches on at least one cardiometabolic marker. The result does not crown keto as universally best; it does show that composition of lost weight and metabolic repair are not identical across popular plans.
Separately, researchers identified low levels of a placenta-made protein as an early signal of preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction—raising the possibility of earlier screening and a new prevention target. And a study highlighted a quieter clinical problem: many women treated for recurrent urinary tract infections did not have bacterial UTIs at all, pointing to overuse of antibiotics and missed alternative diagnoses.
Stars, heat, and the deep Pacific
Astronomers using the Very Large Telescope reported strong evidence that Betelgeuse has a companion—Betelgeuse B, a young star a few times the mass of the Sun. Periodic dimming on a roughly six-year cycle may be the companion blocking light rather than the red supergiant pulsing alone. Confirmation still needs a second look.
Climate work this week underscored an uneven burden: children aged 0–9 already face far more additional humid-heat stress days than older adults. Meanwhile, robots mapping lava fields more than two kilometers down in the Pacific showed how magma once pooled under a hardened crust and burst outward, rewriting a stretch of seafloor.
Quiet wins in conservation and longevity biology
A Himalayan musk deer—“vampire deer” in the headlines—turned up on a camera trap in West Bengal after nearly 70 years without a confirmed record. A zoo-raised turtle released in 2011 reappeared as a nesting adult after 12 years missing, and two of her offspring were released into the same refuge. And a study of bowhead whales, which can live past 200 years with enormous cell counts yet relatively little cancer, pointed to unusually accurate DNA repair rather than extra tumor-suppressor copies as the likely defense.
