Walter 'Chekov' Koenig dead at 90

In Memoriam: Walter Koenig (1936–2026), Beloved Pavel Chekov

Walter Marvin Koenig, the actor forever associated with Ensign Pavel Chekov on Star Trek: The Original Series, passed away on October 25, 2026, at his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, at the age of 90 from natural causes.

Born September 14, 1936, in Chicago to Russian Jewish immigrant parents (Isadore and Sarah Koenig, originally from Lithuania/the Soviet Union; the family shortened the surname from Königsberg), he grew up in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan. He studied psychology (earning a BA from UCLA after time at Grinnell College) before training as an actor at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York alongside future stars like James Caan. Of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage and identified as Jewish in biographical sources, his background informed aspects of his life and career, including the authentic-feeling (if comic) Russian accent he brought to Chekov, partly inspired by his father.

Koenig joined Star Trek in 1967 for Season 2 as the youthful navigator Pavel Chekov, added in part to appeal to younger viewers. He brought humor, energy, and memorable lines (including the famous “nuclear wessels”) to the bridge of the Enterprise, appearing throughout the rest of the series. He reprised the role (rising in rank) in the six original-cast feature films through Star Trek Generations (1994), received Saturn Award nominations, and later voiced Federation President Anton Chekov (a nod to Anton Yelchin) in Star Trek: Picard. He also appeared as the complex Psi Cop Alfred Bester on Babylon 5, wrote for television (including an episode of the animated Star Trek), authored books and comics, taught acting, and remained active in conventions and fan projects. His son Andrew (of Growing Pains) died by suicide in 2010; his wife of many decades, Judy Levitt, died in 2022. He is survived by daughter Danielle and other family.

His passing comes during Star Trek’s historic 60th anniversary year (the original series premiered September 8, 1966). Throughout 2026 the franchise has been celebrated with global events, screenings, tributes, and fan gatherings that honor the optimistic vision Gene Roddenberry launched six decades ago—the same legacy Chekov and his crewmates helped build.

May his memory be a blessing. Rest in peace, Mr. Chekov—you navigated the stars and our hearts with humor and heart.

A prayer for his soul and loved ones:

Eternal God, source of all life and light, we entrust the soul of Walter Koenig into Your care. Grant him peace in Your presence, comfort to his daughter Danielle, his extended family, friends, and the countless fans who loved him as Chekov and as himself. Surround those who mourn with strength, healing, and the warmth of cherished memories. May he live long in the legacy of the stories he helped tell, and may his loved ones find solace in the knowledge that his journey continues beyond the final frontier. Amen.
