Trump Attacks Pope Leo XIV

President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on Pope Leo XIV this week, criticizing the first American-born pontiff over his calls for peace amid the ongoing U.S. involvement in the war with Iran. Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday night with a lengthy post in which he called the Pope “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible for Foreign Policy.” He accused Pope Leo of “catering to the Radical Left” and advised him to “focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician.” Trump even claimed credit for the Pope’s election, writing that “If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican” because the Church supposedly chose an American to “deal with President Donald J. Trump.” He added that he doesn’t want a Pope who criticizes the President for doing what he was “elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do.”

Trump Should Worry About His Own Record

Instead of attacking the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics, President Trump would do well to focus on the failures of his own presidency. His time in office has been marked by skyrocketing inflation that has eroded the purchasing power of American families, expensive and seemingly endless wars that drain our treasury, and rising living costs that make basic necessities like housing, food, and healthcare feel out of reach for millions. Crime has increased in many communities precisely because people are struggling without the basics — stable jobs, affordable housing, and hope for the future. These are the real crises facing the United States, not the moral voice of the Pope calling for peace and reconciliation.

Pope Leo XIV is right to speak out. His appeals for peace in the Gospel tradition are not political meddling; they are the timeless mission of the Church. Trump’s broadside reveals a leader who has taken leave of his senses and intelligence, lashing out at one of the most respected moral authorities on the planet while his own policies contribute to instability at home and abroad.

The Pope Is the Better Leader — and a True American

By contrast, Pope Leo XIV stands as a figure of dignity, wisdom, and genuine leadership. As the first pope born in the United States (in Chicago, no less), he is a proud American who understands the values of justice, compassion, and human dignity that this country was founded upon. His approval and respect among Catholics and people of goodwill worldwide far exceed the polarizing ratings of any modern politician. The papal voice carries moral weight precisely because it is not beholden to electoral cycles or partisan interests.

Trump should remember that the papacy is older than any other political office in existence today. The Chair of St. Peter dates back nearly 2,000 years, long before the founding of the American republic or any contemporary nation-state. Moreover, the Pope is not merely a religious figure — he is the sovereign of Vatican City, a recognized head of state with full diplomatic relations around the world. His role gives him not only the right but the duty to address matters of war, peace, justice, and the common good.

The papal voice is more powerful and ancient than any other. It has outlasted empires, kings, and presidents. When the Pope speaks on politics in the service of peace and human life, he does so with an authority rooted in two millennia of moral teaching, not fleeting public opinion polls or campaign rhetoric.

Defending the Pope’s Right to Speak

Critics who tell the Pope to “stay out of politics” ignore history and reality. The Church has always engaged the world — from St. Augustine to modern popes who helped end the Cold War and promoted human rights. Pope Leo XIV is simply continuing that tradition. He has “no fear of the Trump administration nor of speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel,” as he recently stated. That courage is exactly what the world needs: a voice that prioritizes human lives over geopolitical maneuvering or personal egos.

Americans deserve better than leaders who attack the moral conscience of the nation and the world when it challenges their decisions. Instead of feuding with the Pope, President Trump should reflect on the real challenges facing our country — economic hardship, the human cost of war, and the erosion of civil society. Pope Leo XIV offers a better model of leadership: one grounded in humility, service, and the pursuit of peace for all people.

The papacy has guided souls through crises far greater than any single administration. Its wisdom endures because it places the dignity of every human person — American or Iranian, rich or poor — at the center. In that light, the Pope is not only right; he is exercising the very leadership the moment demands.

Recent Attacks on Catholic Churches: A Troubling Trend

Recent Attacks on Catholic Churches: A Troubling Trend

In recent months, there has been a disturbing increase in attacks on Catholic churches across the United States and even at the Vatican. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and security of religious institutions and the motivations behind such hostility.

Attacks in the United States

According to a report by the Family Research Council (FRC), there were **436 acts of hostility against churches in 2023**, more than double the number reported in 2022. These incidents included vandalism, arson, bomb threats, and gun-related incidents. The report highlighted that attacks on churches have been occurring in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Some notable incidents include:

- Vandalism at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish in Queens, New York: The Christmas crèche was attacked twice in one night.

- St. Columba Church in Brooklyn, New York: A stained-glass window and a cross were damaged.

- Fowler United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Maryland: Vandals caused over $100,000 in damages, ripping pages from Bibles and hymnals, and removing a Christian flag.

- At Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Jersey, someone put human feces in the baptismal font.

The FRC report suggests that these attacks are part of a broader trend of growing hostility towards Christianity and core Christian beliefs. The report's author, Arielle Del Turco, noted that such acts of hostility can send a message that churches are not respected or welcomed in their communities.

Attacks at the Vatican

Even the Vatican has not been immune to these attacks. On February 7, 2025, a man of Romanian origin desecrated the main altar of St. Peter's Basilica by climbing on top of it and throwing six candelabras to the ground. He then began to remove the altar cloth before being detained by Vatican security. The man was later identified as having a serious mental disability and was placed at the disposal of Italian authorities.

This incident follows a similar event in June 2023, when another man climbed the high altar and undressed before being arrested. These repeated breaches of security at such a high-profile religious site have raised questions about the effectiveness of existing protective measures and the potential risks posed by individuals seeking attention or acting out due to mental distress.

Conclusion

The recent attacks on Catholic churches, both in the United States and at the Vatican, are deeply troubling. They highlight the need for increased security measures and a greater understanding of the motivations behind such hostility. It is essential for communities to come together to support and protect their places of worship, ensuring that they remain safe and welcoming for all.

Friday the 13th - Paris Attack, Japan Earthquake...

Today is Friday the 13th, a day some people interpret as being 'bad luck.'  Well, it sure has been a day full of absurdities and tragedies but superstition had nothing to do with it.  First, object WT1190F fell into Earth's atmosphere. WT1190F was the space junk that was destined to crash into Earth.  The debris came in and dissolved causing no damage. Second, shortly around 1-2 PM EST, new reports came out on Twitter, CNN and other media that Paris was attacked once again. Third, an earthquake measuring 7.5 hit Japan causing a minor tsunami.

I want to focus more on the attack in Paris, France.  It is believed that 8 terrorist perpetuated the attack in Paris just blocks away from Charlie Hebdo which was the target of 2 terrorist gunmen earlier this year (see: http://www.sacerdotus.com/2015/01/shooting-at-charlie-hebdo-jesuischarlie.html).  Seven of the eight attackers are dead. They were suicide bombers. The Le Bataclan concert hall was taken hostage. Reports cames in that 100 people were held hostage there; however, recent reports are saying that over 100 were killed there.  An American band 'Eagles of Death Metal' were performing at the time. Two bombs went off at Gate J of Stade de France where French President Francois Hollande was a spectator.  He was immediately taken away to safety. Video from fans posted online show the soccer players playing as a loud boom can be heard shocking everyone in attendance.  The Petit Cambodge restaurant, Le Carillon Bar, Les Halles bar and Belle Equipe bar were also attacked with bombs and open gun fire while shouting "allahu akbar."  Over 160 are believed to be dead.  This count may rise as things settle down and French authorities can assess the evidence.  The band U2 was scheduled to have a concert on Saturday but they have cancelled it.

The attack comes just hours after US airstrikes killed 'Jihadi John' who was the 'face' of Isis and was videotaped beheaded several individuals. No terrorist group has claimed responsibility, but it is believe this attack was the work of Isis cells in France.  The world has pledged solidarity with France.  Many landmarks have lighted their building with the colors of the French flag. President Hollande vowed to fight back and that this fight will be merciless.  American President, Barrack Obama vowed to help France in this time of need.  France and the United States have a close relationship since the American Revolution.  France helped Americans fight the British by providing weapons, training and other support during the American Revolution.

Twitter and other social media have been trending with #Paris and #PrayforParis.  Some anti-migration people have taken to twitter to put blame on migrants entering Europe. Actor Rob Lowe and an American congressman received backlash after tweeting tweets pointing out that France closed its borders; insinuating that migrants had something to do with the attack.  For the most part, the majority of social media users have been offering support and prayers to the French people.  #ouvrelaporte #strandedinUS  #PorteOuverte have been trending as well which means "open the door" and is a hashtag alerting people that French citizens are opening their doors to those effected by the attack.

I will update this as I learn more.  Please keep France and Japan in your prayers.

U.S. Ambassador Stabbed

Ambassador Mark Lippert who was a former U.S. Navy Seal was attacked by a man with a blade who was shouting anti-war slogans.  Lippert is the United States ambassador to South Korea.  He was rushed to a hospital in Seoul and is doing well.  The incident is being investigated and the Obama administration has sent their well wishes to the ambassador who tweeted that he is doing fine and is in good spirits.  It seems like the security of ambassadors is not a top priority.  We must work to change this.  Let us pray for the recovery of Mr. Lippert and for the safety of our ambassadors worldwide.

Knock Out Game

A new wave of stupidity is hitting city streets.  Kids and adults are engaging in a new "game" called "knock out."  In this "game," a person is struck behind his/her head without warning to the point of being knocked out cold.  Already several people have been attacked and one was killed.  New York City is rushing to pass a law to classify such an attack as gang related which can be punishable to up to 25 years in prison.  Minors caught would be tried as adults.

In NYC, Jews have been targeted so far and a 78 year old grandmother was also a victim of the brutal assault.

See this disturbing video of an attack:

Obviously, the people promoting and carrying out this behavior are mentally ill.  Anti-social behavior is a trait found in those who are mentally ill or psychopathic.  If a person cannot realize that this activity is dangerous and has no shame to do it, then that shows that the person is clearly not in his/her right mind.  Luckily, some arrests have been made and police are patrolling the streets in order to protect the public an catch any attackers in the act.

Boston Marathon Attack

Today at around 2:50 P.M. here in Boston, two bombs went off during the Boston Marathon.  Three people are reported killed and over 50 injured.  The bombs exploded near the finish line as runners were advancing towards it.  No one knows who is the perpetrator of this act.  Obama vowed to bring justice to whoever is responsible.

Some reports indicate that a Saudi man was apprehended at the Boston Common; however, other reports say the man is in the hospital with burns; and that the allegedly perpetrator was in the crowd and ran shortly before the bomb exploded.  A bystander tackled him and turned him over to the police claiming that the man was acting suspiciously.  The man in custody claims to be innocent and is cooperating with authorities.

More details are coming in as we learn about today's horrific event.  The government is labeling the attack as terrorism and many cities, in particular New York, have gone on high terror alert.

Already some are crying out conspiracy.  There are rumors circling around that the government is responsible for this attack in an attempt to scare Americans into entrusting their security more and more into the hands of the federal government.  Spectators were screened, their backpacks and other bags were checked.  It is unclear how these bombs were able to be smuggled in.

In any event, let us pray for all those who were affected in any way.  May God rest the souls of those who have died and may He bring comfort and healing to those injured.
