Motu Propio on Theology

Pope Francis has issued a new apostolic letter, Ad theologiam promovendam, to update the statutes of the Pontifical Academy of Theology and to call for a "paradigm shift" in theology for the world of today.

The letter, dated November 1, 2023, was published on November 3 by the Vatican News. In it, the pope urges theologians to engage in dialogue with different traditions, disciplines, religions, and cultures, and to develop a "fundamentally contextual theology" that can interpret the Gospel in the light of the concrete situations of people's lives.

The pope also emphasizes the need for a "transdisciplinary" approach that can make use of new categories and languages developed by other forms of knowledge, and for a "pastoral" theology that is attentive to the voice of the people and the wounds of humanity and creation. The pope affirms that theology is a discipline of wisdom that must be spiritual, prayerful, and prophetic, and that must serve the Church's mission of evangelization and encounter.
