Fr. Michael Scanlon, Rest In Peace

Father Michael Scanlon, TOR Franciscan has passed away at the age of 85.  Born on December 1, 1931, Michael Scanlon was a man of great faith. He originally became a lawyer, but felt God's call to the priesthood.  He joined St. Francis Seminary in Loretto, Pennsylvania in September of 1957 and was ordained in 1964. Scanlon wished to be a missionary, but the superiors of his order did not allow it.  Instead, he was made the academic dean of Steubenville college. After this he would work as rector of St. Francis Seminary, but returned to the college where he became president. He worked tirelessly to better the college but was not free from failure. The college struggled to stay alive. Nevertheless, Scanlon managed to build the college up again leading up to its promotion to university becoming The Franciscan University of Steubenville.

From there, the university began to flourish hiring big name theology experts such as Dr. Scott Hahn. The university is know for its lively atmosphere using the charismatic model which Fr. Scanlon loved.  Fr. Scanlon will be truly missed. He may have not become the missionary he wanted in the way he wanted, but God made him a much bigger missionary. He was very instrumental in my conversion and the conversion of many.  May he rest in peace.
