A Punk rock band was sentenced to 2 years for hooliganism, disturbing the peace, and religious bigotry after barging in an Russian Orthodox church disturbing the peace and desecrating a religious building. They claim to have done this to protest President Putin and Patriarch Kirill I. Already, some are imitating these protesters in New York, but did not enter any Church building. They just blocked traffic and were annoying New Yorkers.
I am all for free speech, but one cannot barge into private property and harass people. It is unfair and immoral. Whether the building is a Church or not, it is wrong to hijack a place that is not yours it in order to voice your opinion. The 2 year sentence may be a bit too much, but they do need to set an example that this behavior cannot be tolerated.
I hope copy cats won't attempt something similar in Churches around the world. A Church is a place of prayer, a place of peace; not for political dissent or juvenile nonsense.
