Puerto Rican Cardinal Passes Away

His Eminence Cardinal Luis Aponte Martinez passed away at the age of 89 from heart failure and other complications.  He was the first Puerto Rican to reach the College of Cardinals and won't be the last.

Cardinal Martinez participated in Vatican II and help Puerto Rico make the transition.  He participated in the Conclaves that elected Popes John Paul I and Bl. John Paul II.  He was loyal to Rome and an ardent vocal defender of the Faith.

Like all who are loyal to the Magisterium, he was no stranger to controversy.  He spoke out against abortion, homosexuality, immorality in the media, and the advancement of Protestant Evangelical sects in Puerto Rico.

Governor Luis Fortuno declared a 5 day mourning period in all of Puerto Rico.  He is a pride for Puerto Ricans everywhere and will be missed.

May Cardinal Aponte pray for the Puerto Rican people and for us all.  Rest in peace!  Descanse en la paz de Cristo!
