Tatiana Lozano Pereira of Brazil was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing and burning her gay son Itaberli Lozano. In 2017, Pereira claimed that her son ran away and came back to kill her. She claimed that she killed him with a knife out of self defense. The authorities did not buy her story. It was discovered that she had hired local boys/men to severely beat her son after luring him home with promises of reconciliation between the two. The boys/men revealed the details of what really happened to the police.
Pereira then stabbed her son to death and set him on fire after the men refused to kill him. Her husband then helped dispose of the charred remains. Young Itaberli Lozano has posted things on Facebook detailing the abuse he received from his mother and denounced her homophobia. You can read more here: https://www.sacerdotus.com/2017/01/mom-stabs-sets-son-on-fire-for-being-gay.html.
A jury of her peers agreed to a 25 years and eight months prison sentence for her crimes. Two others charged with the plot, Victor Roberto da Silva and Miller da Silva Barissa were sentenced to 21 years and eight months. Lozano's stepfather and husband of Pereira was charged with the concealing of a deceased body, but his trial is being rescheduled. The uncle of Itaberli came to the defense of his nephew saying that his nephew had a job, was polite and never quarreled with anyone. He added that his only problem was his mother who did not accept him as a gay male. The parties sentenced all plan to appeal their sentences.
The news of the killing of this young man was heartbreaking. How can a mother kill her own son just because he is gay? To me, the sentence is too little. She should have been sentenced to life. As a Catholic, I naturally disagree with the homosexual lifestyle; however, this does not mean that I or the Church wants gay people to be beaten or killed. This goes against God, the Church and humanity! We are all sinners. No one is perfect. Gay people are human and deserve our love and respect despite our disagreements.
I cannot imagine the horrors this beautiful teenage baby boy faced. To be beaten up by boys your own mom hired or by men hired to kill him is just evil. Moreover, for a mom to stab and set her own son on fire is sickening and evil. To think that this boy went home and saw his mom cheering on as the guys beat him and then calling for his death only to do it herself. It is just horrendous and saddening. Moreover, we do not know for sure if he was dead when he was set ablaze. Can you imagine being in his position watching your own mom stab you? It gets me sick to my stomach.
If you are gay and are reading this. Do not be afraid if your family attacks you. Go and seek help from the police, teachers or clergy. You do not have to be a victim of abuse of any kind.
May young Itaberli Lozano through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Flying Priest? Fr. Marcelo Rossi Sent Flying off Stage after being Shoved
There was the "flying nun," but the "flying priest?"
Most of us remember when Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was pulled down to the ground at the onset of Midnight Mass or when Pope Francis was pulled onto a disabled man by a group of fanatical Mexicans in Mexico. Well, something far worse (in my opinion) happened to popular Portuguese charismatic priest, Father Marcelo Rossi. During a closing Mass for a youth retreat attended by over 50,000 Catholics, mostly youth; a woman passed through security and stepped up to the stage set up for Mass and shoved Father Rossi of it. The entire thing was caught on video as it was being live-streamed. Fr. Rossi can be seen flying in the air and the sound of him impacting the ground can be heard followed by the sounds of a shocked audience.
There is still no known motive for the attack thought atheist blogger, Hemant Mehta who goes by the moniker "Friendly Atheist" claims the priest said that "Fat women don't get into heaven" and this triggered the attack. Again, there is no evidence for this as the motive and the claim seems to be an attempt to garner blog hits by Mehta who is known for being dishonest.
The woman is a 32-year-old who was also a participant in the retreat. Her fellow youth group member explained to the police that she suffers from mental illness. Father Rossi was not seriously hurt and will not be pressing charges against the woman. The incident brings into question the security at the venue and the reality of mental illness which is rampant in many cities around the glove. People suffering from mental illness often go undiagnosed or are not helped. They then have mental illness spells which can be dangerous for others and for the mentally ill person.
Fr. Rossi was a physical education instructor prior to being ordained in 1994. He is a well-known singer and author and is seen is a pop culture icon in Brazil. However, the priest has offended some in the LGBTQ community for comments calling homosexuality a mental illness and attacking so-called same-sex marriage.

Pope Wants Valid Proposals for Married Priests
There are conflicting reports circulating around the media regarding celibacy and Pope Francis. Some articles claim that Pope Francis is going to allow married men to become priests in Brazil while others state that Cardinal Cludio Hummes, president of the Episcopal Commission made the request.
It is not new that Pope Francis has been open about having a discussion regarding celibacy, female deacons and so on. However, this does not mean that he wants to make any change. If he wanted to make such a change, he would have done it by now. In previous statements, the pope has reaffirmed the beauty of celibacy.
It is no wonder that there is a shortage of priests in the world. There are many reasons for this which I will not go into now. However, we must be realistic. Our Catholic population is going faster than it can get priests to care for them. This is a problem. People are hungry for God. This is good. However, without priests, who will pastor those people? Who will feed them via the Sacraments? I have always theorized that eventually, the Church will have to create a sort of "sub-orders" under the umbrella of Holy Orders that will allow for married men to be ordained priests just as there is the permanent diaconate.
This seems to be the topic now, according to the media outlets reporting. Cardinal Cludio Hummes and Pope Francis seem to have in mind the creation of such a "viri probati" or "sub-order." The creation of such a thing will possibly scandalize those who call themselves "conservative" or "traditionalist." However, any Catholic who knows his or her history will know that married priests are nothing new. Clergy from the early Catholic Church were married. We read in Matthew 8:14 that even St. Peter, the first pope was married. Jesus healed his mother-in-law. Jesus never endorsed celibacy, but never condemned it either. In fact, He said that there are those who become eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven and leaves it open to those who can receive it (Matthew 19:11-12). Eunuchs were men who were castrated, were born with damaged reproductive organs or simply chose to remain celibate.
The strongest evidence for the endorsement of celibacy comes from St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 7. St. Paul gives a long discourse on relationships and how they may affect service to the Lord. Those men who are single can focus on the Lord more, as opposed to, those men who are married and have to care for their wives and families. He describes himself as the former and encourages it. The earliest mandate for celibacy comes from Canon 33 from the Council of Elvira written in AD 303 which stated that all "bishops, presbyters, and deacons and all other clerics are to abstain completely from their wives and not to have children." However, this mandate was not universal. Nevertheless, we see how celibacy was developing throughout the life of the Church. It was not until the 12th century in 1139 during the Second Lateran Council that priests were mandated into celibacy. The Council of Trent in 1563, later on, reaffirmed celibacy.
It is interesting to note that the mandate of celibacy was mostly instituted in order to restore some morality among the clergy and protect Church assets and properties. Priests who died often left widows who sought Church assets and property as an inheritance. The Catholic Church had to intervene, for obvious reasons.
Allowing priests to marry has its positives and negatives. It may increase the number of priests. However, it may also bring problems regarding assets and property as in the past. If a priest dies, where will his family live? Surely, they will not be allowed to live in a rectory for life. Moreover, parishioners may not like the idea of supporting multiple clergy-families living in rectories. Space itself is a problem. Rectories would have to be updated to allow priests with large families. As you can see, there are many problems that may arise with the allowance of married priests. However, if a "sub-order" of married priests is created, there may be fewer problems. These priests may be allowed to live in their own homes or apartments just like permanent deacons who do not live on Church properties. Moreover, these priests can hold secular jobs just like permanent deacons and can assist only at parishes who cannot have a full-time priest. There are many possibilities that can come about if such a "sub-order" is created within the Latin Rite. Only time will tell if such a "sub-order" will be created that will function alongside permanent deacons, celibate priests etc.
I think a "viri probati" sort of order of priests is tangible who work alongside celibate clergy.

Mom Stabs & Sets Son on Fire for being Gay
A bond between a mother and child is probably the most sacred human union possible. The bond begins from within a mother's womb at conception. However, this bond is not always perfect due to fallen human nature.
A mother, Tatiana Lozano Pereira in Sao Paolo, Brazil has confessed to killing her oldest son. Itaberli Lozano's charred remains were found January 7 in a field in Cravinhos. He has been missing since late December, according to the boy's grandmother.
Tatiana Pereira claims that she killed her son because he was gay. She accuses him of bringing drugs and men into a home they shared. Pereira told the police that on December 27, there was a fight between her and Itaberli. He ran away and then came back two days later. She claims that she was upset because he threatened to kill her and took a knife and killed him in self-defense. Afterwards, she says her husband helped dispose of the body of her son. Police investigating the case did not buy her story, finding holes in it. They learned via Itaberli's Facebook that his mom had hired boys to beat him up. He posted his injuries on social media. The police questioned these boys and they revealed more details about what really happened.
Itaberli Lozano was lured home by his mother in an attempt to reconcile. There, she had two men ages 18 and 19 waiting to attack Lozano. They beat him up to teach him a "lesson" and she requested that they finish him off. However, they refused. Upon doing so, Itaberli's mom took a kitchen knife and stabbed the boy. They took the boy to a field and set him ablaze leaving only charred remains of the photogenic young man.
The boy's uncle denounced his sister and defended the honor of the boy saying he did no drugs and was a good kid. Itaberli was known as a polite kid who never quarreled with anyone and had a job.
This news is heartbreaking. How can a mother kill her own son just because he is gay? As a Catholic, I naturally disagree with the homosexual lifestyle; however, this does not mean that I or the Church wants gay people to be beaten or killed. If you are gay and are reading this. Do not be afraid if your family attacks you. Go and seek help from the police, teachers or clergy. You do not have to be a victim of abuse of any kind.
May young Itaberli Lozano through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Germany Wins World Cup 2014
Glückwünsche Germany!
Germany has just won the World Cup 2014 in Brazil! They have worked hard for it and have earned it. After all the match-ups, it was Argentina and Germany who were left to battle it out for the cup. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was even present for the final game. Argentina could not score despite doing so well in previous games. Their star, Lionel Messi was not too happy with the outcome. Despite receiving an award himself, he made no attempt to mask his disappointment by demonstrating for all a serious gloomy face.
This is unfortunately indeed. It is only a game Messi, cheer up! There is nothing worse in sports than a sore loser who cannot summon up integrity and enjoy the moment even if the victory was not on his/her side. What surprised me most was the crying. There was so much crying everywhere it seemed as if it were a funeral instead of a sporting event! Again, it is only a game!
Anyhow, congratulations to Germany. I am sure Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is smiling in the Vatican now. I hope Pope Francis did not make any wagers. :-)

World Youth Day Rio 2013
World Youth Day was initiated by Blessed Pope John Paul II and has been an ongoing tradition on the local and international level. Its purpose is to aid the young people in their spiritual growth by providing Liturgies, catechesis, and other activities geared towards their age appropriate psychology.
Pope Francis experienced his first World Youth Day as Pontiff and seemed to have enjoyed every second of it. The trip had a few scary moments when a bomb was discovered in a toilet at a Shrine the Pope was scheduled to visit. Also, the Fiat carrying Pope Francis went on the wrong street and right into traffic. Crowds stormed the Fiat and security was overwhelmed and obviously sweating buckets out of nervousness. Pope Francis didn't seem to mind since he made it clear from the beginning that he wanted to be with the people and not isolated.
During his appearances, Pope Francis spoke about renewal, trust in God, evangelization, rebellion against the secularist cultures of the world and openness to God's will. He called on Bishops to not be afraid to go to their flocks to the point of having their "scent" on them. He called on them and priests to leave the walls of their rectories and be witnesses on the streets. To the youth, he called on them to cause a "mess" in society; to rebel against the ideas that the world is presenting by bringing the Gospel to it. He criticized the world's view that marriage is outdated or out of style and said that marriage is always in style.
Pope Francis also visited a hospital, and a slum in Rio. The latter was significant because this slum is known to be a place where drug cartels and other criminals dwell and where people live in horrible conditions. However, this did not matter to Pope Francis who made it a mission to be with the people regardless of their condition. He challenged governments to pay attention to all people and not just the wealthy.
Meanwhile, there were protests against the Brazilian government nearby; however, they did not protest the Pope's visit. Only a few made comments claiming that the World Youth Day was a waste of money. However, what of those soccer games? Soccer games in Brazil often erupt in violence and the security costs are in the clouds. Why not complain over that waste of money? Security and its cost would not be an issue if people behaved at soccer games.
There were few protests against the Pope, but these were from the typical feminists and pro-contraception groups who are upset with the Church's teachings. These people usually go in order to start trouble or because they are envious and want to ruin the "party."
No incidents were reported and for the most part, the pilgrims of World Youth day returned peace and love to those who protested their gathering. Thank God, nothing was witnessed like that in Madrid where throngs of angry secularists harassed youth coming for World Youth Day.

| Bishops Dancing |
I was appalled by it and really don't understand why he is so upset about it. This event is geared towards the youth. When evangelizing, we must know the psychology of the people we are ministering to. I see nothing wrong with the bishops "dancing" during this event as long as it is outside of the Liturgy. Psalm 149:3 says, "Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!" Father Z has to realize this and not be tempted to become a Pharisee concerned with externals.
If you are reading this and were part of the World Youth day at Brazil, please contact me. I would love to hear your stories so I can blog on them.

Atheism on the Decline
Atheism is on the decline, according to a new study. The study conducted by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity in Massachusetts has demonstrated that Christianity is replacing atheism in places where atheism has be thought to be increasing.
This comes to no surprise. Atheism does not have the credentials needed in order to be rationally accepted by the educated person. It proposes the non-existence of God without supplanting that claim with evidence - something they constantly request of theists.
Atheist leaders such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris must start pressing the 'panic button.' The "Militant Atheism" agenda is nothing but a movement based on propaganda, emotivism and ignorance. We all are hardwired for belief in God. There is no way around this biological fact. Atheists exist because they willingly refuse to acknowledge the existence of God and the supernatural.
I wrote about the rates of atheism in comparison with religion in these two posts:
http://www.sacerdotus.com/2012/09/atheism-on-rise.html
http://www.sacerdotus.com/2012/12/religion-is-growing.html
Atheists on Twitter are also on the decline especially after I had Twitter troll and abusive atheist "Rosa Rubicondior" removed. Hopefully Twitter will now become a more civil place.
The cry that "atheism is growing" is nothing but propaganda. Religon is here and will not go anywhere but up in numbers.
This week, the Catholic Church had its World Youth day which is a series of days celebrating the Faith in Christ Jesus in a way that is geared towards the youth.
This year's World Youth Day was held in Brazil and nearly broke the record with over 3 million participants. Imagine, 3 million young people gathering in undesirable local conditions just to hear the Gospel being preached by an elderly man called the "Pope."
He is not performing tricks, or dancing. He is not singing in a boy band or rapping; he is preaching the Gospel via words and example. No musician can ever gather the crowds that Christ gathers before His Vicar on Earth, the Pope.
Science, Theology and Philosophy are killing atheism. As Schroeder wrote: "The relationship between early modern atheism and science tended to embarrass rather than strengthen the fledgling atheism's case."
Atheism only attracts those who are attracted to bad behavior. Some psychologists call this the
"Misfit syndrome." Remember in elementary school; there was always that kid that had to be naughty for some reason?
Remember that he/she found pleasure in bullying, asking the teacher stupid questions or making smart remarks?
Well, this is the typical atheist of today. They are adults with this kind of naughty child's mentality.
Let us continue fighting on and not be afraid to challenge atheism head on.

Pope's First Trip and William's First Child
In the news
Pope Francis has just arrived in Brazil and was greeting by millions. He chose to leave the traditional bullet proof "Popemobile" back in Rome and chose an open jeep instead. While traveling via motorcade, his vehicle was swarmed by mobs of people trying to get a glimpse and handshake from the Pontiff who had his window open. Security forces wrestled with people as they stormed the vehicle.
The Pope even got stuck in traffic which must have been a nightmare for security. Nevertheless, all went well and the Pontiff arrived safely to the official welcoming ceremony.
Prior to his arrival in Brazil, the military found a homemade explosive at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida. The bomb was destroyed.

Twitter Indulgence?
News reports have gone out claiming that the Pope will be granting indulgences via twitter. This is not entirely true. Pope Francis has granted plenary indulgences to those who are participating in World Youth Day 2013. He also extended the indulgence to those who cannot participate physically, but will be united with the youth in spirit. This can apply to those who follow the events via the media or social networking.
This does not mean that one will have sins forgiven or will receive indulgences just by following @pontifex. One must fulfill the requirements in order to receive the indulgence.
What is an indulgence?
"An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints."81
"An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin."82 The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead.83
